Bonus Edition - The One With Deb (feat. Deborah Harkness)

Description: Listeners, you really are in for a treat today! Fresh from her attendance of the National Television Awards (recorded on the 25th of January, 2019), Deb dropped in to talk A Discovery of Witches with us! Pull up a chair to the Daemon table, and join us while we have a visit with an executive producer of the show, a historian, a professor, the author/creator of the All Souls universe, and now an official friend of the pod. There are show spoilers, so if you haven't watched the entire series, you may want to wait, but if you don't mind, neither do we - enjoy!

This is a bonus episode, so we remain on schedule to publish A Discovery of Witches - Season 1, Episode 3 Thursday evening for US/Canadian subscribers, and Friday morning world wide, as originally planned.

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. 😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

In this episode:
  • The airport bookstore story: The novels were sparked by an odd vacation moment. Not too many years after the success of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight,” Harkness, surveying the racks of paperbacks at an airport bookstore, was struck by the fact that so many of the books “suggested vampires, daemons, witches, fairies, werewolves and all manner of supernatural creatures were living among us,” she recalls. “I was intrigued, because I was convinced that if there really were such creatures, I would know a few of them. Where were they hiding? What did they do for a living? How did they date? My answers to these questions became the All Souls trilogy.” ~ NYT, Sep 2018 - by Tina Jordan
  • We talk red carpet at the National Television Awards
  • Deb's retrospectively written bucket list
  • Cast chemistry
  • The actors she gets to work with: Alex Kingston (OUR SARAH), Valarie Pettiford (Emily, Angela had no idea of your burdens!), Teresa Palmer (the only Diana in our heads), Aisling Loftus (sweet Sophie), Greg McHugh (yay!), (πŸ‘‘ Queen) Agatha aka Tanya Moodie, and last, but never least we ask about Matthew Goode (vampire who uses his Christian name, always!)
  • Character development for the show (generally, and specifically with a focus on Satu)
  • Empathy for characters; how it's easier for viewers watching the show (the Baldwin bus company needs a fleet, now!)
  • Scenes that made us cry
  • The directors for the blocks and Deb's presence during filming
  • The vehicles chosen! πŸ˜†
  • Deb's availability to the actors as a resource
  • Non-verbal communication
  • The amplification of characters as a result of actually being able to watch them
  • Juliette - A Vampire Story!
  • Those Vampires, tho... (Gerbert and Domenico)
  • Solitary vs. collaborative writing
  • We try to squirrel Series 2 & 3 info (spoiler alert: #DaemonFail)
  • What is Deb excited for next season?
  • The sets: witches' archive ... and what would a daemon archive look like?
  • Deb's cameo, and her wish for a future cameo
  • Fandom questions! Answers to things we (and many) were wondering . . .
  • The 'Brat Pack'!
  • Which role does Deb think will be an amazing character for someone to play?
  • The costume designer/crew for series 2.
  • And it's dinner time! Thank you, Deb!

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
