Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 82! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 13 of The Book of Life

To hear us talk, you'd think the title was about the BFF! No, it's about Benjamin. We get it.

Take 82 - The One With the Bad Seed

Description: It's time for Benjamin to triple-down on his awfulness. This time, he relishes in terrorizing Miriam to the point of her chanting prayers while in distress. No fear, Miriam. Chris will save the day! Maybe. In the meantime, Matthew tries to keep his cool, while Diana walks a tightrope between quelling Matthew's protectiveness, and trying to make us feel comfortable with Chris's. Neither is working. ๐Ÿคจ This episode continues the theme of our Chris dislike, but there were good conversations to be had, as far as breaking down the "why". Thanks for sticking with us through the last episode, and take our advice: Don't put too much stock in our feelings and opinions, we offer them as ideas to think about. It's your impression/opinion that matters when it comes to interpreting the chapters for your rereads.

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. ๐Ÿ˜Š  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

We imagine Chris's nickname for Benjamin is derived from this 1956 Thriller
Topic:
Chapter 13, The Book of Life
  • Miriam calling in the middle of the night praying? Nothing is good here.
  • Matthew takes control of the situation — then the light comes on in the hallway ... and here we go!
  • Chris decides now is the time to bust into the crisis!
  • Miriam gets back to herself after she hears her CV recited to her by some stranger.
  • Sarah is woken up, Fernando joins with a laptop. Benjamin's terrible show begins.
  • Benjamin and his witch. Not a happy tale. Benjamin is straight-up crazy.
  • Benjamin seems to be way ahead of Matthew when it comes to discovering why weavers can carry blood rage vampire's offspring.
  • Benjamin signs off with a barely veiled threat to Diana.
  • Matthew pulls an oubliette move: “Let’s rescue the weaver!”
  • Miriam disconnects in Miriam fashion.
  • Chris punches Matthew. We have problems with these actions. It is explained.
  • He tries to punch Matthew again, but not so fast Christopher!
  • Sarah decides a talk needs to happen. After she's had her smoke.
  • The name calling begins “The Bad Seed”
  • Diana decides she’s going to be doormat right……..NOW!
  • Down the stairs we go, and Matthew gives Chris a taste of his own medicine.
  • In the kitchen - it’s time to talk
  • The discussion begins. Darwin, Marcus, science-y stuff. Chris is figuring out what Matthew has been working on.
  • Chris’ cross-examination begins. Matthew doesn’t appreciate it.
  • A science rap-battle occurs.
  • The Tuskegee speech from Chris comes out angry, and we are upset at the “angry black man” trope being employed here. Not on purpose, we believe, but someone should have looked at this.
  • Fernando attempts to move the convo forward. “What do we do now?”
  • Marcus gets called to monitor Benjamin’s feed.
  • Diana gets a phone call. It's Vivian Harrison -- the congregation is on to the Bishops.

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
