Daemons Discuss - Podcast: The 2019 Annual Holiday Episode!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas 2019!

Description: Well, what can we say about this episode, but it's the last one of the year! All Souls-y stuff? We tried. Going off the rails, chatting like we do? We succeeded! Perfect background noise for wrapping presents, drinking your hot spiced beverages, fighting the last minute shopping traffic, or trimming the tree! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a blessed New Year.

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. 😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Countdown to Christmas - A Giveaway!

Happy Holidays, everyone! This is the last giveaway of the year!
It's that time of the year . . . and we've been busy Daemons in our -- cover-story -- human lives. But we HAD to make time for this! It wouldn't be a Daemon holiday season without the last giveaway of the year! So here we are, and we are counting down to Christmas Eve . . .

We are going to stay true to our tradition (borrowed from The Book of Life) and give away something either hand-me-down or hand-made. This year -- because we're extra -- we're doing both hand-made AND hand-me-down!

What you see is what is included!
Enough from us, because this is a SHORT giveaway! It ends on Christmas Eve! Let's get to the point:

Up for grabs:
  • πŸŽ„Shadow of Night (Headline paperback) signed by Deborah Harkness -- THE OLD-SCHOOL PURPLE COVER! - Hand-me-down; we've had this sitting in our closet for a while, and it's time for a new home. Yes, it was new when we got it . . . but years later, this (now rare) purple cover is sort of "antique," no?
  • πŸŽ„Witchball socks! Falls under neither catagory. It's winter. One should have some toasty socks. 🧦
  • πŸŽ„A daemon gift packet from one of our favorite daemons, Belia Simm! Hand-me-down & hand-made; Belia's beautiful set is made by her very own hands, from the watercolors to the graphic design. She sent us this to include in a future giveaway! So now we hand it down . . .
  • πŸŽ„ A Bishop-Clairmont glass cabochon bracelet; hand-made. Hey! We're crafty!
  • πŸŽ„All Souls swag (bookmark, pin, sticker, magnets...all the better to stuff your stocking with!)
As usual, we've provided several ways to enter! You'll have one mandatory entry, a trivia question, optional social media follows, and you can also tweet about this daily for more entries -- do one, some, or all! This giveaway is open to our international audience. Make sure you read the terms/conditions at the bottom of the post, and enter below!

Update: CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS S!

Fall 2019 Giveaway!

This may become a tradition . . .
We are having a GIVEAWAY RE-RUN! Last year, we had this same giveaway, but let's do it again for 2019. The saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

We love celebrating holidays, but as much as the retail marketers tell us that it's time for Santa, we say wait a minute! SLOW DOWN! For us here in the US, we have still have one of our favorite stuff-your-face holidays to look forward to! American Thanksgiving! And what better way to honor it, but by offering a cookbook containing early-American recipes (co-authored and illustrated by a big All Souls fan; she designed the ASC 2017 badge), and the book telling us about our favorite early-American vampire? Since we are feeling so revolutionary, we are going to make this an international giveaway. Not so traitorous, after all -- eh, England? 😏

Up for grabs:
  1. A Thyme to Discover -- Here's the write-up on A Thyme to Discover: Revive your inner pilgrim and master the art of colonial cooking with sixty recipes celebrating America's earliest days!

From their voyage on the Mayflower to the days of the American Revolution, early American settlers struggled to survive in the New World. Join us as we travel through time and discover how our forefathers fed their families and grew a nation, from eating nuts and berries to preparing fantastic feasts of seafood and venison, and learn how you can cook like them, too!

With gorgeous and whimsical hand-drawn illustrations from beginning to end, A Thyme to Discover, spanning the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, is an illustrated historical cookbook for foodies, history buffs, and Americans alike. Cohen and Graves reimagine old original colonial recipes from pilgrims, presidents, and Native Americans, and modify them to suit modern palates and tastes. Arranged chronologically as the English settlers cooked and ate their way into becoming Americans, these deliciously historical recipes include:

    * The First Thanksgiving, 1621: "Venison over Wild Rice Cakes" and "Pumpkin Pudding with Rum Sauce" *Alexander Hamilton's "Beef Stew with Apple Brandy" and Abraham Lincoln's "Chicken Fricasee" * Rhode Island's "Bacon-Kissed Clam Cakes" and Massachusett's "Chowdahhhhh" * Forefather's Day, 1749: "Sufferin' Succcotash with Buttered Lobster" * Jim Beam's "Bourbon Oatmeal Raisin Cookies"
  2.  And, yes! We're throwing in a 1st edition (signed by Deborah Harkness) US hardcover of Time's Convert, too!
*Update! Congratulations, Emily!

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 61! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 35 of Shadow of Night

"Beware the witch with the blood of the ..." Wait! How'd did that prophecy go? 😜

Take 61 - The One With the Prophecy

Description: Diana finds herself tied up, and negotiating with two creatures who have decided they hate her, and want her gone. When we first open this chapter, it's hard to say how she'll wriggle herself out of this mess. As we saw in A Discovery of Witches, in the oubliette scene, a flash to her past brings clarity to who she is and what she's capable of. No need for Matthew, here! “You’ve always had the power, my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself.”– Glinda (The Good Witch), The Wizard of Oz

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. • (1:08:52) Last thoughts/Outro.
Topic:
Chapter 35, Shadow of Night
  • We open with Diana negotiating with terrorists! ⚠️
  • At least try to soften Louisa up, Diana? Negotiation 101!
  • These two creatures — no reason in the world any negotiation would work.
  • The threats escalate quickly! 😳
  • Louisa has a tolerance for blood rage and opium! 🀀
  • Ysabeau’s ring! Louisa claimed this trinket back (so, there was a broken finger involved)
  • Louisa is convinced once Matthew’s eyes are opened, he’ll be happy to see Diana dead.
  • How long have blood rage vampires have had the stigma placed on them?
  • A Domenico tangent! We don’t mind!
  • Angela theorizes that Matthew has empathy for broken creatures like Kit and Louisa.
  • The third eye opens up! Oh right, Diana! You can do that! πŸ‘
  • Louisa got a hold of a horse….what could go wrong? πŸ‡
  • Diana takes a day-dream break and visits with her younger self and Stephen
  • OK…the time-loop talk. Hang on….we are trying to unspool the timeline here . .  . πŸ•°
  • Diana had her dragon from an early age. Stephen and Corra had already met!
  • Stephen is very HONEST. “Nope!”
  • We discuss the arc and what was in it and relate it to another part of the trilogy
  • Does Corra skip across timelines?
  • Diana is creating some magic from her blood…where is this leading?
  • BAM! Just when Diana is getting herself loose, Kit strikes!πŸ—‘
  • Think. Stay alive.
  • Diana grows WINGS! And a dragon head….πŸ‰
  • Do Philippe and Goody know each? We don’t underestimate either of them.
  • Corra sets Diana loose, and down below while Diana floats up, Kit and Louisa crash! We imagine this scene to be cartoon-ish.
  • Diana traps Kit and Louisa.
  • Diana decides to play fortune teller, and scares the crap out of these two!
  • Hancock comes in like the Tasmanian devil!
  • Diana: What prophecy?!!!
  • Henry and Jack arrive to see the show.
  • Whoops. Here comes Matthew. Walter and Pierre are not far behind.
  • Matthew notices Diana was hurt. He’s ANGRY! 😑 Jack calms him down.
  • Kit decides to accuse Diana of cuckolding Matthew. Kit: HOW DARE YOU, MADAME!
  • We discuss if Louisa would know if she knew if Diana carried the blood of the Lion, or was she guessing⁉️
  • Kit and Louisa are left to Hancock and Walter to be dealt with.
  • Back in the house of angry vampires and witches; Diana is healed by Susanna.
  • We theorize about why Matthew didn’t want to use his blood to heal Diana.
  • We wonder why Matthew didn’t share the prophecy earlier.
  • “… a deadly force drawing me into the darkness” and drawing us to the end.
  • FIN.
Just in time for this chapter! Teresa Palmer happened to be filming this scene recently! Original post

"Baldwin had been made a vampire in Roman times and had been Philippe’s favorite."

Take 60 - The One With the Favorite Son

Topic
Character Study - Baldwin Montclair
  • We discuss Baldwin’s crashing into A Discovery of Witches (the novel), and Angela and Jean are forever changed.
  • Hot Ginger Vampire is born!
  • Michael Fassbender — what’s he got to do with this?! πŸ’•
  • Our fan-casting adventures in 2012 ...
  • The Knights of Lazarus speech - it was full of history, and it gave us a picture of the Knight's duties and responsibilities; “The Knights don’t come to their master’s aid because of a love affair gone wrong, Matthew. We fought at the Battle of Acre. We helped the Albigensian heretics resist the northerners. [...]”
  • The gambit speech did it for Jean. “The Congregation let you go for some reason of their own. Make your next move before they make theirs. Don’t wait your turn like a good girl, and don’t be duped into thinking your current freedom means you’re safe. Decide what to do to survive, and do it.”
  • How we all relate to Baldwin
  • We discuss the times we see Baldwin have emotions.
  • We talk about Matthew’s non-reactions at some of Baldwin’s actions.
  • Being made in Roman Times - Jean gives us a historical synopsis around the time Baldwin was turned.
  • His love life! What we don’t know…what we do know!
  • He was 30 when he was turned, he’s a Leo . . . there! We started his Tinder profile!
  • Baldwin at some point grew tired of fighting, and started crushing empires via financial markets.
  • We decided that in A Discovery of Witches, Baldwin was Philippe’s proxy.
  • We talk about Baldwin’s personality vs. Philippe’s charm.
  • Baldwin’s beliefs vs. Matthew's.
  • Baldwin’s mind-set, and how he doesn’t prioritize emotions - low EQ is our diagnosis πŸ€”
  • Our introduction to TV Baldwin!
  • Trystan is rather expressive, facially.
  • His entry into the congregation — that was a wonderful scene!
  • The TV show bringing us new perspective into the book.
  • Who on his phone contact list is labeled “What now?!” - we guess Ysabeau! πŸ˜‚
  • Jean wonders what triggered Baldwin to give up war and head to numbers . . .
  • Angela cannot wait to get to the Book of Life and examine Baldwin some more. That's coming sooner than we think!
Can't help but wonder if this is what one of Baldwin's relationships looks like?

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Happy Halloween! The Theme is Green - A Giveaway!

Since the theme is green, are we really surprised that Sarah's witchball would take center stage?
πŸŽƒ Happy Halloween, everyone! Here's a treat!

This year, our theme is GREEN! When we think of green, we think of The Book of Life (in this universe, anyway)! So, of course, we are including a signed copy of Book 3 of the Trilogy. In Book 3, we are introduced to Sarah's mascot (who rides like the wind on her New Broom) -- the infamous witchball . . . and will you look at that? She happens to also be GREEN! Thus, we are throwing in some witchball inspired swag in the prize package!

As usual, we've provided several ways to enter! You'll have one mandatory entry, a trivia question, optional social media follows, and you can also tweet about this daily for more entries -- do one, some, or all! This giveaway is open our international audience. Make sure you read the terms/conditions at the bottom of the post, and enter below!

Up for grabs:
  • πŸ‘» The Book of Life (Penguin paperback signed by Deborah Harkness)
  • πŸ§™πŸ»‍♀️ Witchball Socks from our Redbubble Shop ⟵Click to see! "Super soft and stretchy knit crew socks, socks fit: men's US size 3.5-12, women's US size 5-14, UK size 4-11.5, EU size 36-46, knit with reinforced toe and heel, with extra cushioning in the sole"
