TV Show Review - A Discovery of Witches - Season 1, Epiosode 2
Description: Traveling further in the small-screen universe, we meet some new characters on screen: Juliette, Hamish, Domenico and Gerbert! All sorts of things seem to be happening around Matthew and Diana, and we work our way through the events, and hash out our flurry of thoughts as the characters work through their dilemmas!SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind! Please be advised, we are approaching the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way, as it's released. π Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

Official episode summary:
EPISODE 2
From the press release:
Blind to the interest she has stirred among creatures, Diana fights an increasing pull towards the magical and turns her back on her witch heritage, but matters take an unexpectedly dark turn when Satu is sent by Peter Knox to intimidate her. In Venice, beautiful but murderous Juliette has her fatal obsession with Matthew reawakened. And just as Diana decides to trust Matthew with a secret only she knows about the book, he flees in a desperate bid to protect her from his cravings. But in so doing, he leaves Diana exposed to all her enemies.

Yeah. We're done here. |
So. Much. To. Unpack! In meeting Juliette, we see the predatory nature of vampires; they stalk and target their prey, be it by seduction, curiosity, or pure hunger. We meet her father, Gerbert, who seems to have the ultimate control over her, and you have to wonder (let's pretend we didn't read the books!) if all vampire families are like that! We also see that the vampires are very suspicious of each other. Gerbert refers to Baldwin and Domenico as if they were mere nosy meddlers in his affairs.
On the witch side, we see what's at play when Gillian scoffs at Diana for hanging out with a vampire. It also gives us an indication on how loyal she is to Peter Knox due to the fact that he is on the congregation. Diana displays her strength when counters Gillian, and stands up to Satu and Peter. We're not sure if it's ignorance of the the hierarchical construct created for creatures by creatures a thousand years ago. Or is it because she's stubborn in her beliefs; people should be taken in individually for their actions, not their species. It appears she inherently trusts Matthew now, and is willing to share this adventure with him. Was it that crazy "I'm gonna eat you, if you don't watch it" display that Matthew provided last episode at the boathouse that triggered it? Diana definitely defies regular logic, for sure!
We also got to meet a daemon. Hamish was fantastic, and was just as effective of stripping Matthew of his guard as he was in the books.
We loved watching Matthew and Diana's relationship begin to bloom in this episode. "You can hear my heart?" -- "All the time." Bad Wolf doesn't seem to care if a clean-up crew has to come in and mop Daemon goo off of the floor. Nope. Anyway, there was definitely a "stay tuned for more of this" vibe that had us captivated in the end.
We'll talk to you next week when we get to see the relationship between this reluctant witch and guarded vampire grow further! Dinner! Blood! Kissing! AAAAAAAH! Oh, and there are some revelations of huge powers, blah, blah, blah, etc. ... π (j/k, re: "blah, blah, blah").

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
