Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 84! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 15 of The Book of Life

Sol in Virgo ... finally!

Take 84 - The One Where We Go Back To School

Description: Sol in Virgo dictates that children go back to school. Well, we are children at heart, so we'll take the advice! It also says it signifies a change of place. Matthew and Diana are entering a brave new world of disclosure; 😳 subsequently, Chris is entering the necessary new world of accountability (πŸ™Œ with a little help from Miriam). This episode was great fun to record -- we hope you enjoy listening to it πŸ˜„

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. 😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:

Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 83! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 14 of The Book of Life

Christopher Roberts, award winning scientist, a super-protective BFF, and on paper, a great friend to have; he remains a thorn in our sides.

Take 83 - The One With This Bish, Chris.

Description: This title, in our opinion, requires explanation. The word "Bish" (substitute for "Bitch". We substituted the term to avoid distributor problems; Apple Podcasts, Google, Spotify, etc. frown upon titling episodes with *ahem* foul language), is a description for OUR process. WE find Chris to be a conundrum. On the one hand, he's a scientist aiming to do good in the world, yet his behavior remains problematic. He's got legitimate points when it comes to racial inequities, and it's been a wild roller coaster ride trying to grapple with our understanding of the author's intent, and the in-your-face-ness of the retcon when it comes to his characterization. In other news, the coven failed the test, Vivian makes an appearance, Sarah stands her ground, and Chris, Matthew, and Diana officially team up. In the end, we embark on a journey away from the Bishop House, and we don't look back! Sol in Virgo, here we come!

Topic:
Chapter 14, The Book of Life
  • The Coven had failed the test! πŸ‘Ž
  • Abby and Caleb! We forgot their names! Anyway, sorry Caleb, the coven failed.
  • Chris stage whispers … Vivian is like “who’s this guy?”
  • Diana introduces Chris as the "colleague". 🀨 WHICH IS IT?! lol!
  • We move to the family room and settle everyone in. It's serious, now!
  • Cassie and Lydia — the cheerleaders blabbed!πŸ“£
  • Victory spells? Smart. 🀭
  • The Bishops are represented by Matthew, Attorney at Law. ⚖️
  • Sidonie von Borcke. She’s apparently impressive and intimidating!
  • Housing market ditch πŸ’₯πŸš™
  • Diana “sO yOu CaN lIe…” Diana!!! You don’t leave a paper trail of your deception!
  • Diana is trying to figure out what kind of witch Sidonie is, and Vivian is like “a powerful one”
  • Chris lays down truth, but is a bad secret keeper!
  • Bus segregation, school segregation, it’s all bad.
  • We wonder if Chris has Diana-colored glasses on - DIANA GOGGLES! πŸ₯½
  • The explanation of the covenant sounds sketchy to Chris
  • Chris has a lot of salient points, here! Then he goes ahead and moves back to his assholish comments.
  • Was Chris suggesting that Matthew was stalking her for different reasons?
  • We discuss spousal wisdom being ignored vs. the wisdom from a colleague.
  • It’s time to flee the Bishop house….where will they go? Seville?
  • Sarah….GO SARAH! πŸ™Œ
  • How does Peter get a say in his replacement?! He was kicked off!😑
  • The report on Diana, and Sarah’s brilliant answer…
  • Peter would probably love new dark spells, that’s why he’s interested in Diana.
  • An offer is made.
  • Matthew is reluctant, but eventually he agrees to Chris’s terms.🀝
  • Chris lays out his requirements…and he’s got a message for Miriam
  • We can’t wait for Miriam to hand Chris his ass…
  • Don’t look back… 🎢
  • FIN

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 82! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 13 of The Book of Life

To hear us talk, you'd think the title was about the BFF! No, it's about Benjamin. We get it.

Take 82 - The One With the Bad Seed

Description: It's time for Benjamin to triple-down on his awfulness. This time, he relishes in terrorizing Miriam to the point of her chanting prayers while in distress. No fear, Miriam. Chris will save the day! Maybe. In the meantime, Matthew tries to keep his cool, while Diana walks a tightrope between quelling Matthew's protectiveness, and trying to make us feel comfortable with Chris's. Neither is working. 🀨 This episode continues the theme of our Chris dislike, but there were good conversations to be had, as far as breaking down the "why". Thanks for sticking with us through the last episode, and take our advice: Don't put too much stock in our feelings and opinions, we offer them as ideas to think about. It's your impression/opinion that matters when it comes to interpreting the chapters for your rereads.

SPOILER ALERT! We imagine Chris's nickname for Benjamin is derived from this 1956 Thriller
Topic:
Chapter 13, The Book of Life
  • Miriam calling in the middle of the night praying? Nothing is good here.
  • Matthew takes control of the situation — then the light comes on in the hallway ... and here we go!
  • Chris decides now is the time to bust into the crisis!
  • Miriam gets back to herself after she hears her CV recited to her by some stranger.
  • Sarah is woken up, Fernando joins with a laptop. Benjamin's terrible show begins.
  • Benjamin and his witch. Not a happy tale. Benjamin is straight-up crazy.
  • Benjamin seems to be way ahead of Matthew when it comes to discovering why weavers can carry blood rage vampire's offspring.
  • Benjamin signs off with a barely veiled threat to Diana.
  • Matthew pulls an oubliette move: “Let’s rescue the weaver!”
  • Miriam disconnects in Miriam fashion.
  • Chris punches Matthew. We have problems with these actions. It is explained.
  • He tries to punch Matthew again, but not so fast Christopher!
  • Sarah decides a talk needs to happen. After she's had her smoke.
  • The name calling begins “The Bad Seed”
  • Diana decides she’s going to be doormat right……..NOW!
  • Down the stairs we go, and Matthew gives Chris a taste of his own medicine.
  • In the kitchen - it’s time to talk
  • The discussion begins. Darwin, Marcus, science-y stuff. Chris is figuring out what Matthew has been working on.
  • Chris’ cross-examination begins. Matthew doesn’t appreciate it.
  • A science rap-battle occurs.
  • The Tuskegee speech from Chris comes out angry, and we are upset at the “angry black man” trope being employed here. Not on purpose, we believe, but someone should have looked at this.
  • Fernando attempts to move the convo forward. “What do we do now?”
  • Marcus gets called to monitor Benjamin’s feed.
  • Diana gets a phone call. It's Vivian Harrison -- the congregation is on to the Bishops.

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 81! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 12 of The Book of Life

It's BFF TIME! Who needs bracelets to make it official?! The Book of Life does it for us!

Take 81 - The One With the New BFF

Description: Our reentry into the chapter universe lands us at the Bishop House on Diana's Birthday. Happy Birthday Diana! You get a d*ck in a box, and a reunion with your BFF, Chris! Wait, what?! That's right. He's the BFF because The Book of Life says so! His acceptance of creaturedom is admirable, and who wouldn't want a wingman to tell her that the dude that she's married to and having kids with is an a$$hole?! Perfection! If you sense a little sarcasm, gold stars; it's a good thing we didn't have a podcast in 2014, because time has certainly tamped down this chapter review. Chris fans, hang in there, and allow us to explain ourselves. Take what we say with a grain of salt, and feel free to laugh at us for our inability to turn off our brains and just enjoy the chapter; it'll serve us right! Enjoy, guys . . . and disagreement leads to conversation; we'll keep our ears perked for the phantom yelling in the ether!

Topic:
Chapter 12, The Book of Life
  • It’s a D*CK IN A BOX! 🎁
  • We discuss the chapter and the reason it exists — to introduce Chris as a major character (our conclusion)
  • Diana’s birthday is sort of overlooked after her first present! πŸŽ‚ 16 candles all over again.
  • Fernando and Sarah are kept busy by reading the NYT . . . lol!
  • Matthew the boy scout
  • Angela accuses Diana of cock-blocking herself!
  • Diana is out watering the garden and then she’s accosted by a stranger! Well, a stranger to us.
  • Chris is Diana’s best friend. That’s right! DON’T ARGUE! πŸ‘«
  • HIPAA and privacy violations are OK in this universe!
  • Chris is upset because Diana hasn’t shared where she was. Matthew is wondering who this dude is accosting his wife.
  • Chris confronts Matthew’s confrontation…
  • The weird introduction. Credentials first, relationship second.
  • Sarah is effusive all of a sudden! She’s invited him to stay for the weekend!
  • The in-your-face, tone deaf defensiveness from Chris sort of rubs us wrong. We're not sure if it's current events that makes this weird, but it was weird back then, too.
  • The Em news. 😞
  • Time to spill the family secrets! To the keeping room we go!
  • Chris takes the creature news pretty well.
  • * Deb said Marcus revealed the world of creatures to Joss Whedon (maybe. Probably)
  • Time travel — still not shocked, Chris?
  • Werewolves — touchy subject! 🐺
  • Enter Fernando . . . . with cocktails a wink and a smile . . . ☕️πŸ˜πŸ˜‰
  • After all of that, Chris is most shocked that Diana’s pregnant.
  • FIN

Fernando and Sarah will help you swallow the creature concept with whiskey (+ a splash of java) chaser!
