On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 89! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 20 of The Book of Life

The Duchess of Marlborough, Sarah Churchill

Take 89 - The One With the Murals

Description: We aren't gas-lighting you this time! We swear -- this is the episode with pictures on the wall! In this chapter, we journey through young Jack's troubled blood-raged mind using the images he creates as a medium to convey his wounds, his sins, his fears, and his hopes for the future. Together with Matthew, Andrew, Gallowglass, and (hmph) Chris they navigate a path forward ... until! Please be advised, due to our current work and personal obligations, our episodes have had a stagnated schedule in this last quarter, but we are on our way to righting the ship! Thanks for your patience, and enjoy this episode.

  • (1:22:35) Last thoughts/Outro.
Topic:
Chapter 20, The Book of Life
  • We love the details of this chapter, it’s also apparent that Diana and Matthew cannot have a “quiet life”
  • We are in an omniscient point of view
  • The summons in the middle of the night. ๐Ÿ“ž
  • Miriam arrives…she’s a bit freaked out again.
  • Diana is awake … she’s told to stay home.
  • Wolf pack articles! Lessons on how to raise a vampire family
  • At Gallowglass’ place the scene set is very haunting. Jack was “redecorating”
  • Jean gives us an Easter egg for the ship "Endeavour" ⚓️
  • Bach’s St. Matthew’s passion plays . . .  jack is painting furiously in a manic state
  • Chris is there, WTF?! ๐Ÿคจ
  • “Dick-no-tized” … Jean! ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿš™
  • The plantation chair and Chris. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
  • Chris continues to needle Matthew and us. ๐Ÿ˜ก
  • Andrew Hubbard has been dealing with Jack for a long time; thank goodness he know what to do.
  • There were studies of hands, Jacks memories, and (!!!) Benjamin
  • Philippe’s GIFT? What? ๐ŸŽป
  • The Duchess of Marlborough…
  • We wonder why Philippe would save Jack, while ordering Matthew to cull his grandchildren in New Orleans? ๐Ÿค”
  • Matthew picks up Duchess in order to steer Jack out of his frenzy.
  • Chris is goal-focused to get data.
  • Whoops! Content error! It’s Mozart, not Bach who did Lacromsa (the requiem)
  • Jack draws Diana, and this seems to be the end of his frenzy
  • Jack comes to, and realized what he did.
  • The wolf story…๐Ÿบ
  • Matthew is aghast at Jack’s science ignorance
  • All for one…and all that jazz ๐Ÿ™„
  • We love snooty Matthew….
  • It’s time to talk about the different experiences,
  • TIME FOR A WALK!
  • Matthew and Chris have a chat. Two samples were taken from Jack while he was filled with blood rage!
  • There is no known cure for blood rage
  • A bit of science talk ….then…
  • The boys have returned…
  • We met somebody while walking…. whoops ๐Ÿ˜–
  • FIN

Take 88 - The One With the Paterfamilias

Description: Andrew Hubbard, Diana, and Matthew discuss their newly-realized family dynamic, and grapple with what must be done in order to protect the latest de Clermont black sheep -- Jack. We also fell victim to a self-inflicted Mandela effect! Wow! * Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 87! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 18 of The Book of Life

Jack's scent is the least of what's changed about him . . .

Take 87 - The One With Coal Fires & Foggy Mornings

Description: JACK! Jack tells his tale to Matthew and Diana, Hubbard fills in the gaps, but we now have a picture of what Jack suffered through, and who was mostly responsible for his anguish. Stay tuned for our SIFTs segment, where we do a podcast version of "vague-booking" -- enjoy!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. ๐Ÿ˜Š  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

Topic:
Chapter 18, The Book of Life

  • It’s JACK!
  • Coal fires and foggy mornings . . . ๐Ÿ”ฅ
  • Matthew watches the scene from afar. We wonder if he doesn’t trust Gallowglass to actually protect Diana? ๐Ÿค”
  • OH NO. Jack has the blood rage!
  • Did we expect father Hubbard in first read? 2 no, 1 yes.
  • Diana’s getting choked out, and Matthew is scuffling with Hubbard! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
  • The many Loberos . . .
  • Jack’s blood rage is really skittish; anything can set it off.
  • We reiterate that Matthew remains a dead-beat dad.
  • We mention his book description vs. the TV iteration of F. Hubbard
  • They enter the house to listen to Jack’s tale. STORY ๐Ÿ“– TIME!
  • Gallowglass is not happy with this situation. A scuffle with Hubbard just proved that he should have taken up the offer to practice his "wrestling" with Chris.
  • “Mistress Roydon” … “My name is Bishop”
  • Father Hubbard is your grandson, Matthew (MIKE DROP) ๐ŸŽค
  • Benjamin Fox is Hubbard’s sire, and now Benjamin wants Jack for the blood rage.
  • Gallowglass enters the “jump to conclusions” mat.
  • Our assumptions included a ring criminal kids or the land of misfit toys ... Gallowglass went a little further with his.
  • Gallowglass gets pinned, and we are in the ditch ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿš™
  • Hubbard is strong … ๐Ÿ’ช
  • Diana calls Corra? We wonder why?
  • Corra flies around with fire and song . . . we question the “fire” part ๐Ÿ”ฅ
  • Corra remembers Jack (but we point out that, for Corra, it wasn’t that long ago)
  • They settle in to listen to Jack’s tale ... OK, NOW it's STORY ๐Ÿ“– TIME!
  • Jack had the plague prior to his transformation.
  • We learn of Annie's death —wait…Annie’s dead?!
  • We learn the fates of Walter and Henry through Jack’s story -- but Matthew knew this, right?!
  • Jack asked to become a vampire … he wanted to see Matthew and Diana again.
  • We learn that Benjamin manipulated Jack through his feelings for Matthew.
  • OH! Philippe knew…
  • Matthew had no idea of Philippe’s admiration of Matthew; Matthew, get over yourself. ๐Ÿคจ
  • Jack goes into a blood rage, and Matthew takes control.
  • We discuss how Diana can articulate the intricacies of blood rage when it appeared to the reader that she had only limited exposure to Matthew in this state.
  • The blood feds the blood rage vampire AND the blood rage.
  • The tale gets more horrific “Vampire on the loose in London” ๐Ÿ“ฐ
  • Peter . . . what were you doing?! Getting PAID, is what he was doing! ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿค‘
  • Ugh…Benjamin and crew are AWFUL
  • Ultimately, the tale makes Jack (and us) sick ๐Ÿคข
  • Diana weaves spells to calm Jack down and help him sleep. Jean sees this as a mild version of spell binding.
  • “You’re Jack’s father. You always have been” ๐Ÿฅบ
  • FIN

Sir Walter's study in the Tower of London

Mabon 2021 Giveaway!

Don't miss out!
The time has come! Mabon is here, the days are about to shorten, and we all prepare for the dark. For those of you who actually harvest, it's time to store it away, and the rest of us will join you in reflection. The Druids call this celebration, Mea'n Fo'mhair, and honor the The Green Man -- the God of the Forest -- by offering libations to trees. The offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are tradition, and we're pretty sure they figured that the trees wouldn't mind if they had some wine and ciders, too ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿท๐Ÿป. Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone ๐ŸŒ›๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒœ, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth. That is all well and good, but fans of this universe mainly know that Mabon is when Matthew and Diana meet! Now we Daemons ... you all know how we celebrate! Let's say it together: WITH A GIVEAWAY! Our prize theme, this time, goes on to follow Diana and Matthew beyond the first three books, while keeping with the origins story...

Up for grabs:

  • ๐Ÿ A first edition signed (by Deborah Harkness) copy of Times Convert ๐Ÿ (US Viking Hardcover)"... Time's Convert, the fourth book in the All Souls Series channels the supernatural world-building and slow-burning romance that made the previous books instant bestsellers to illuminate a new and vital moment in history, and a love affair that will bridge centuries"
  • ๐Ÿ Bodleian Oath Bag๐Ÿ We picked this prize up from the Bodleian Library book shop in Oxford. This is the real deal!
  • ๐Ÿ Assorted surprise Daemon swag๐Ÿ Stickers, buttons, bookmarks...OH MY!

As usual, we've provided several ways to enter! You'll have one mandatory entry, a real easy one, optional social media follows, and you can also tweet about this daily for more entries -- do one, some, or all!

This giveaway is also open to our international audience. It will run until September 29th, so if you are a Twitter user, you'll have plenty of time to get multiple entries in! Make sure you read the terms/conditions at the bottom of the post, and enter below.
