AMC & BBC America Premiere Giveaway!

Join us as we squee over this series!
We are sooo excited to share our excitement over the TV adaptation of our very favorite book series, The All Souls Trilogy (named for book one of the trilogy, A Discovery of Witches)! If you are new to this whole TV show business, and have no clue about the big fuss we are making -- first of all, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! πŸ˜† That's OK, because if you didn't know, you know now! The TV show is having a second premiere in the US! The show will be coming to AMC and BBC America starting April 7th 2019!

As some of you know, we've covered each episode of the series on our podcast ... but you may have held off listening because you didn't opt-in to the streaming services earlier this year. But now, you can listen after you watch each episode on either AMC or BBC America without us spoiling the story for you! Try a sample by listening to this mini-episode; this way you'll know what to expect while you are expecting!

We won't spoil it for the newcomers, but please trust us, THIS SERIES IS WORTH EVERY BIT OF THE HYPE! We've truly enjoyed the entire first season, and it's a must-watch for fans of the books. The adaptation is positively stellar. Our only real complaint? We wish it were LONGER!

Now for the GIVEAWAY!
OK, just like in January, we are holding an epic giveaway! Thanks to Sundance Now/Shudder, Penguin Books, and A Discovery of Witches TV, we are offering some great A Discovery of Witches swag to our followers/listeners!

A t-shirt, the TV adaptation cover paperback and the same water bottle that was given to the cast/crew on set! What?!
Soooooo ... that water bottle? It was the official water bottle of A Discovery of Witches TV cast and crew during the filming of Season/Series 1. That's right, we have one (that we are going to put in the mail   😱 . . . no wonder people think daemons are crazy) to give away to one of you!

The water bottle in the wild; see this IG post here
Besides the water bottle, we are throwing in an A Discovery of Witches t-shirt (from SundanceNow, Shudder, AMC networks), and the novel (with the show tie-in cover -- courtesy of Penguin Books)

To recap, here's what's up for grabs:
  • Official water bottle for the cast/crew of Season 1 of  A Discovery of Witches TV
  • A copy of A Discovery of Witches (Penguin paperback) with the TV show tie-in cover
  • A Discovery of Witches t-shirt (from SundanceNow/Shudder!)
Update! Congratulations Terri M!

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: TV Review! | A Discovery of Witches Season 1, The Binge!

Mod-Renee from The All Souls Discussion Group joins us today!
TV Review - The Binge!

Description: All Souls Discussion Group moderator, Renee joins us from Facebook’s largest group for delving into the All Souls Trilogy, its expanding list of books, and its television show. Administered by Deborah Harkness, this group is what we consider the epicenter of the fandom's origins. Renee's daily interaction with the group allows her to share unique perspectives when it comes to parsing this story, therefore we thought she'd be a perfect fit for talking about the TV series story arc. This is also our first episode interacting with Discussers this year! Yay! We missed you guys! A very long episode, so maybe take it in bites; but enjoy every one!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way when it is released in the US/Canada. 😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

  • (00:43) Intro/Patreon sponsorship
  • (03:16) Discusser emails/Speakpipe - Thank you Lauren, Nancy, Jennifer & Chloe!
  • (30:48) Main discussion - see topics below
  • (55:34) Housekeeping - Thank you Stephen, Brenna & Alan
  • (1:19:00) Save It For the Show - Where was hot-mess Matthew?
  • (1:36:44) Last thoughts/Outro.

Seems like some life reflection is going on with Matthew and Diana in this photo. If not, we'll do it for them!
Topics:
  • Sympathy/Empathy for characters in the TV show vs. the books
  • Diana’s perspective vs. an omniscient perspective.
  • We needed more episodes
  • Is Gillian dead? A conspiracy theory
  • Keeping the little events that wasn’t on the show to ourselves/maintaining your own vision of some of the story
  • Little scenes we wished we could’ve seen
  • Perceptions of people who came from the books, or vice versa.
  • We wonder if Matthew’s behavior has worsened since Philippe's death
  • Favorite episodes (besides 7 ...  it seems 7 was the universal #1 among the 4 of us!)
  • The different ways we watched/streamed it
  • We got the growl!
  • The clever way that they established Matthew Goode as Matthew Clairmont early.
  • We love Agatha!
  • “All the time…”
  • Beheading? We’re really still doing that, guys?!
  • Stuff we disliked . . .
  • Higher end men’s attire, please!
  • Sept-Tours scenes; very plot-driven
  • Names are important? Sad trombone!
  • Matthew’s tie and the continuity error (or MAGIC! 🎩)
  • One Tesla? Or two (one in England and one in France)? Did they fly to France?
  • The abridged bundling scene
  • A non-reader perspective on the mating/bonding scene
  • Ysabeau appearing more cold and imperious in the TV show
  • We discuss Diana behaving like a child, but we note that she’s treated like one often
  • The witch water scene; it was beautiful in the TV show, however, we missed seeing Ysabeau singing Diana out of her trance.
  • Hot mess Matthew!

On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

EPISODE 8
From the press release:

Matthew’s attempt to rescue Diana from Juliette goes horribly wrong and Diana finally discovers just how lethal her magical powers can be. As Matthew lies dying, Diana must strike a dreadful bargain with the goddess and make the ultimate sacrificial pact with enduring consequences. A failed coup at the Congregation sees its most powerful and terrifying members go rogue, as they close in fast on Madison, where a group of daemons, vampires and witches are now residing together. Baldwin tries to alert Matthew that time is up but he can’t reach him. It’s a deadly race against time for Diana to take flight with Matthew before their pursuers arrive.

To unusual friendships, indeed!

In closing...
We feel this episode was everything we needed it to be as far as ending our introduction to the television series, and advancing the story forward.

We adored:
  • The special effects regarding Diana's flaming bow and arrow
  • Seeing what exactly Baldwin and Agatha were dealing with in the congregation
  • Seeing how Domenico uses information as the ultimate currency
  • Watching the various congregation members operate in survival mode
  • Observing how dangerously similar Gerbert and Peter were
  • The time-walking sequence back to Sept-Tours, and the touching dance between Matthew and Ysabeau
  • The little moments between creatures in the Bishop house
  • The heart-felt goodbyes (although, 😭😒😭!)
That candelabra over her shoulder was NOT there before!
Goodbye to Madison and the present day! We wish there was more time spent on Ysabeau's ring, Faustus, and some of the things they will get to see in the future (Matthew's story time in the books!). Also, we wonder about a certain candelabra that wasn't there prior when they first stepped ... Angela pointed it out as we were whining about the ending. It makes us feel more confident that they actually did make it to Elizabethan England!

In this episode:
Official episode summary:

EPISODE 7
From the press release:

After confronting her aunts, Diana learns the tragic circumstances surrounding why she was spellbound as a child. Diana’s devastation at having lived her life as only half herself is interrupted by the Madison house releasing one of the missing pages from Ashmole 782, sent forward in time by Diana’s father Stephen, a time-walker. As their love grows, Matthew confesses to Diana that he wasn’t able to keep his two previous loves safe. Diana believes he won’t hurt her. But an unexpected encounter threatens to tear them apart once again.

😭😭😭
Juliette, we understand. Domenico can be quite persuasive!
Fly! 😍😍😍
BE FREE, JULIETTE! πŸ¦‹
In closing...
For us, visiting fake Madison was a delight! For it being filmed in Wales, they did manage to convince us that they were in upstate New York. The little details of Americana, the quintessential rental Ford Taurus, the bumper stickers on Sarah and Em's Jeep Wagoneer, the wind chimes on the porch ... it was all great! We'll even forgive the boat-ish Lincoln Continental as a choice ride for Rebecca and Stephen!

Matthew wonders what the house is capable of, but it proves itself to be quite a story teller as it informs Diana, Matthew, Sarah and Emily (and US!) what really made Diana's magic recede to the shadows.

The aunts were perfect. Kudos to Alex Kingston and Valarie Pettiford for their stellar performances as Diana's guardians. We couldn't of asked for better! All of the events in the house were wonderful. From the meeting to storytime from the house, to the emotional aftermath, to the training sessions -- oh dear. It was wonderful. The conversation between the two families (Matthew, Marcus + Miriam and Diana, Sarah and Em) was great! These book readers were not sad. Must we say it again? We wish these episodes were longer!

The continued saga over in Venice is still carrying on while Diana and Matthew are at large. Peter, Baldwin, and Agatha are still trying to sort their stuff out. And then you have the unpredictable factions of that crowd; Satu is detained, and Domenico is being opportunistic as always whilst visiting his bird in a cage. Gerbert, we assume, is working on other angles for creature domination, because he isn't moved by Baldwin's church pew confrontation.

Amazingly, Juliette finally defies Gerbert; she's hit the freedom button! The world is at her fingertips! She can travel! She can go to school! She can paint! She could possibly find a new career in modeling! Maybe she can explore all of that chemistry with Domenico, and see if it has legs? Her whole immortal life awaits her! What was that? Oh. Never mind. Moving on!

Diana's training sessions -- up until now -- had not given us cause for alarm, but that "find the vampire" game kept us on the edge of our seats ... 😱😱😱 ... JULIETTE!

Join us next week as we traverse Diana and Matthew's path out of this mess!

🀭 Peter's "stress ball" is actually a petrosphere...see the prop display from the Science History Museum here
