Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 57! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 31 of Shadow of Night

Take 57 - The One With Red Wine and Onions

Description: The day in/day out of Emperor Rudolf's Prague is wearing on us, however we couldn't have asked for a more satisfactory "goodbye" than this chapter! There's drama (school play), there's romance (in Rudolf's mind!), and there's action (the great escape!). Oh and of course, we finally get our sights on the missing book, Ashmole 782. Enjoy!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. ๐Ÿ˜Š  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

Topic:
Chapter 31, Shadow of Night
  • We start the wagon, we crash the wagon! ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿš™
  • We talk about Matthew’s changes since taking blood from the heart vein - he’s settled, and we decided he was just hangry
  • Diana’s scar collection has grown at this point!
  • We’re not sure we’d want to do regular info dumps with our partners. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ
  • Gallowglass and Pierre are notified that Benjamin is back in town. Neither of them are happy about this...
  • Rudolf’s festival is coming up, and we are all weary of Prague. We understand Matthew!
  • Riding and jousting indoors? ๐Ÿ’ฉ
  • We don’t believe Rudolf is an intellectual (based on this novel, anyway).
  • Let the masque begin! ๐ŸŽญ
  • Matthew is not amused with this spectacle. Diana enters in a fantastic fashion!
  • Rudolf as Zeus - he’s … er, something. We recommend listening to him on the audio books!
  • It’s over, now Rudolf grants Diana a reward! At what cost, though?!
  • Gallowglass explains what was happening during Diana’s entrance. Conclusion: humans are pretty dumb.
  • After days of waiting, they are finally invited to Rudolf’s!
  • Culinary ditch! This time we explore the anatomy of a green bean casserole.
  • Matthew, Diana, Pierre and Gallowglass head to the castle
  • Matthew holds court on one end of the table, and Rudolf holds court on the other.
  • Pistorius rudely starts probing Diana’s head. He does some mind-talking
  • We first learn that Gallowglass smells like sea-salt and mint.
  • Gallowglass takes care of Pistorius ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
  • Dinner's done. Time to check out the curiosities (including the book) ๐Ÿ“–
  • Diana gets yet another necklace. ๐Ÿค‘
  • Diana makes the connection between Benjamin and the necklace, and we try to make sense of it.
  • “Little French Salamanders” - we want to beat Rudolf! ๐Ÿคฌ Diana handles it more diplomatically.
  • Matthew stops giving a shit, he starts burning bridges with Rudolf.
  • Enter Edward. He’s a wreck! He’s got the book.
  • Diana has to look at the book with Rudolf breathing down her neck.
  • The moment of PREUNION ( © ZOE!)
  • We see the new pages: A tree, the alchemical wedding, and an ouroboros with two creatures -- fighting? Hooking up? Unclear.
  • The book’s smell…even worse than the red wine and onions.
  • Matthew knows what this smell is. Eventually Diana gets it.
  • Edward loses his sh!t! He explains that they are bound to the book.
  • Enter Gallowglass, exit the de Clermont clan!
  • The grand escape!
  • FIN
A Bezoar from Rudolf's cabinet of curiousities

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Mabon 2019 Giveaway!

'Tis the season! Let's celebrate the day Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont met! Oh, and the Equinox-- that too!
The time has come! Mabon will be here on the 21st, the days are about to shorten, and we all get prepared for the dark! For those of you who actually harvest, it's time to store it away, and the rest of us will join you in reflection. The Druids call this celebration, Mea'n Fo'mhair, and honor the The Green Man -- the God of the Forest -- by offering libations to trees. The offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are tradition, and we're pretty sure they figured that the trees wouldn't mind if they had some wine and ciders, too ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿท๐Ÿป. Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone ๐ŸŒ›๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒœ, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth. That is all well and good, but fans of this universe mainly know that Mabon is when Matthew and Diana meet! Now the Daemons ... you know how we celebrate! Let's say it together: WITH A GIVEAWAY!

Duke Humfrey's candle, A Discovery of Witches (signed), BadWolf/A Discovery of Witches journal, and a Bod bookmark!
We've gathered a rather beautiful prize package for one lucky winner! So let's see, there's a nod to the Bod ... we've included a bookmark from the Bodleian displaying the Bodleian oath, and paired with that, we have a rather lovely Duke Humfrey's candle (for those dark nights, guys! We are doing theme stuff, here!). We've thrown in a gift from A Discovery of Witches TV -- a journal that was given to the cast and crew prior to filming Season 1 (hey! You'll need a place to record your random thoughts on those dark nights)! Finally, it wouldn't be right without some reading (it's Real-Time Read Along season, after all) -- for that we've put the cherry on top -- a copy of A Discovery of Witches (with the TV-tie in cover) and it's signed by Deborah Harkness! *Bow!*

Up for grabs:
  • A Bodleian Library bookmark๐Ÿ This bookmark features the oath - "I hereby undertake not to remove from the Library, nor to mark, deface, or injure in any way, any volume, document or other object belonging to it or in its custody; not to bring into the Library, or kindle therein, any fire or flame, and not to smoke in the Library; and I promise to obey all rules of the Library."
  • A Duke Humfrey's candle๐Ÿ "An intensely rich, woody chypre accord with soft top notes of leather, bergamot pith and green leaves, leading to a soft base of amber, tobacco and sandalwood"
  • A Discovery of Witches/Bad Wolf journal๐Ÿ Filled with blank, lined paper.
  • A copy of A Discovery of Witches (Headline paperback/UK version/TV-tie in cover), signed by Deborah Harkness ๐Ÿ

Update! Congratulations, Vivian!

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 56! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 30 of Shadow of Night

Diana + Corra are not to be trifled with, Matthew!

Take 56 - The One With the Feisty Females

Description: Gifts, Noblety™, hunting (in 1591, and in present-day), suspicion, submission, reverence, and BENJAMIN?! Yeah, this was a trip. Buckle up, because we may lose a hubcap, or four! We watch Matthew attempt to handle the current females in his life; with ล รกrka he has some success, not so much with Corra, and the jury has been out with Diana. We offer sage advice to any vampire out there with a witch wife: If she has a firedrake, don't piss her off. Just sayin'.

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. • (1:20:14) Last thoughts/Outro.

A merlin like ล รกrka
Topic:
Chapter 30, Shadow of Night
  • The Compendium. First read we were clueless! We’ve since been enlightened.
  • Diana does some pre-emptive soothing. Gallowglass has a plan to get a glance of the book. Boy does he! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ
  • Goop! The Egg! Google it! ๐Ÿฅš
  • Matthew’s gift to Diana. A re-gift? No, maybe a back up plan in case of a spousal f*ck up!
  • King Francis and his motto . . . "I nourish and extinguish"
  • Diana’s freak-out . . . was this a re-gift?!
  • Matthew realizes that they need to FTSIO their way out of Prague!
  • Rudolf’s Noblety™; Diana is surrounded by the women of his court, and we for some reason we veer into the ditch!
  • The birds arrive. Rudolf introduces Augusta to Diana. Augusta notices Matthew. We discuss the predators acknowledging the other.
  • An "incel" - we imagine this is what Rudolf's life would be if he wasn't the emperor. ๐Ÿ™„
  • "Were I the wolf…" Matthew, you sly dog. We appreciate his demeanor and outfit described in the text.
  • Matthew’s left with ล รกrka . . .
  • Matthew communicates with the animals almost as much as Diana!
  • Gyrfalcon. We were both wrong! It's with a "soft" G: gyr·fal·con /หˆjษ™rหŒfalkษ™n/ - listen
  • We discuss this method of hunting (the birds of prey, the dogs, the horses, the testosterone, yada, yada, yada).
  • ล รกrka wins!
  • Diana asks the question that leads us into the Cliff's Notes of the legend of ล รกrka.
  • Enter an absolutely random suggestion: A Masque, you say?
  • Diana saves the day by dangling Zeus in front of Rudolf. ๐Ÿฟ
  • The missing compendium — uh oh!
  • Turns out the compendium is magical, BECAUSE Diana cast a spell on it.
  • Matthew’s insecurities turn into full-on suspicion — it’s not a good thing. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
  • Gallowglass senses an impending fight. Gallowglass: “unf*ck your shit, people!”
  • Corra is unleashed!
  • Suspicion
  • Acknowledgement
  • Trepidation
  • Surrender
  • Reverence
  • Enlightenment
  • Equality.
  • End chapter.

Real-Time Read Guide for 2019!

One of our favorite ways to devour this series . . .

The time is HERE!

We are actually talking about the annual Real-Time Read-Along of A Discovery of Witches. Starting on the 18th of September, Deborah Harkness starts following the footsteps of Matthew and Diana during those first 40 days on the road to the Bishop-Clairmont union.

If you are a member of the All Souls Discussion Group, we have partnered in a Real-Time-Read giveaway! It runs from 19 September to 31 October 2019. Be sure to enter!

Deb's 2019 FB post on the Real-Time Read

Here are some resources to guide your journey:

From Deb's Facebook page this year
Are you new to this series? Just now hearing about it because of all of the TV Buzz? You caught the TV bug yourself and want to know more? Perfect! Of course, you know where to find the series in book form (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, your favorite local brick & mortar or your local library), but check those same places for the audio! The audio is great!

Sample the audiobooks here:

We really love the e-books too. Not only can you carry the whole trilogy (and much more) on one device, they make searching for passages a breeze! You can get them individually for your Kindle, iPad, or favorite tablet of choice, BUT did you know there is also a 3-in-1?

Check out the three-in-one eBook.  One file, three books!

Ok, now for the read-along...
