Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Bonus Edition! | Chatting A Discovery of Witches with Deborah Harkness

Bonus Edition - The One With Deb (feat. Deborah Harkness)

Description: Listeners, you really are in for a treat today! Fresh from her attendance of the National Television Awards (recorded on the 25th of January, 2019), Deb dropped in to talk A Discovery of Witches with us! Pull up a chair to the Daemon table, and join us while we have a visit with an executive producer of the show, a historian, a professor, the author/creator of the All Souls universe, and now an official friend of the pod. There are show spoilers, so if you haven't watched the entire series, you may want to wait, but if you don't mind, neither do we - enjoy!

This is a bonus episode, so we remain on schedule to publish A Discovery of Witches - Season 1, Episode 3 Thursday evening for US/Canadian subscribers, and Friday morning world wide, as originally planned.

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. 😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

In this episode:
  • The airport bookstore story: The novels were sparked by an odd vacation moment. Not too many years after the success of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight,” Harkness, surveying the racks of paperbacks at an airport bookstore, was struck by the fact that so many of the books “suggested vampires, daemons, witches, fairies, werewolves and all manner of supernatural creatures were living among us,” she recalls. “I was intrigued, because I was convinced that if there really were such creatures, I would know a few of them. Where were they hiding? What did they do for a living? How did they date? My answers to these questions became the All Souls trilogy.” ~ NYT, Sep 2018 - by Tina Jordan
  • We talk red carpet at the National Television Awards
  • Deb's retrospectively written bucket list
  • Cast chemistry
  • The actors she gets to work with: Alex Kingston (OUR SARAH), Valarie Pettiford (Emily, Angela had no idea of your burdens!), Teresa Palmer (the only Diana in our heads), Aisling Loftus (sweet Sophie), Greg McHugh (yay!), (πŸ‘‘ Queen) Agatha aka Tanya Moodie, and last, but never least we ask about Matthew Goode (vampire who uses his Christian name, always!)
  • Character development for the show (generally, and specifically with a focus on Satu)
  • Empathy for characters; how it's easier for viewers watching the show (the Baldwin bus company needs a fleet, now!)
  • Scenes that made us cry
  • The directors for the blocks and Deb's presence during filming
  • The vehicles chosen! πŸ˜†
  • Deb's availability to the actors as a resource
  • Non-verbal communication
  • The amplification of characters as a result of actually being able to watch them
  • Juliette - A Vampire Story!
  • Those Vampires, tho... (Gerbert and Domenico)
  • Solitary vs. collaborative writing
  • We try to squirrel Series 2 & 3 info (spoiler alert: #DaemonFail)
  • What is Deb excited for next season?
  • The sets: witches' archive ... and what would a daemon archive look like?
  • Deb's cameo, and her wish for a future cameo
  • Fandom questions! Answers to things we (and many) were wondering . . .
  • The 'Brat Pack'!
  • Which role does Deb think will be an amazing character for someone to play?
  • The costume designer/crew for series 2.
  • And it's dinner time! Thank you, Deb!

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: TV Review! | A Discovery of Witches Season 1, Episode 2

TV Show Review - A Discovery of Witches - Season 1, Epiosode 2

Description: Traveling further in the small-screen universe, we meet some new characters on screen: Juliette, Hamish, Domenico and Gerbert! All sorts of things seem to be happening around Matthew and Diana, and we work our way through the events, and hash out our flurry of thoughts as the characters work through their dilemmas!

In this episode:
Official episode summary:

EPISODE 2
From the press release:

Blind to the interest she has stirred among creatures, Diana fights an increasing pull towards the magical and turns her back on her witch heritage, but matters take an unexpectedly dark turn when Satu is sent by Peter Knox to intimidate her. In Venice, beautiful but murderous Juliette has her fatal obsession with Matthew reawakened. And just as Diana decides to trust Matthew with a secret only she knows about the book, he flees in a desperate bid to protect her from his cravings. But in so doing, he leaves Diana exposed to all her enemies.

Judge Hamish's wardrobe at your own peril. He gives no f*cks about your opinions. YAS, HAMISH!
AB negative?! Are we being punk'd? We are choosing to believe that this is Bad Wolf's nod to the absurdity; the grab bag of answers you'd get depending on the edition of the book A Discovery of Witches you picked up. AB-POSITIVE is the correct answer per Deb (see here, and here), but "AB-negative" does appear in some of the newer prints of A Discovery of Witches. In some copies, chapter 13 would show "AB-negative," then the same book would display "AB-positive" in chapter 36!

A later printing of A Discovery of Witches with the AB-negative mistake!
Yeah. We're done here.
In closing...
So. Much. To. Unpack! In meeting Juliette, we see the predatory nature of vampires; they stalk and target their prey, be it by seduction, curiosity, or pure hunger. We meet her father, Gerbert, who seems to have the ultimate control over her, and you have to wonder (let's pretend we didn't read the books!) if all vampire families are like that! We also see that the vampires are very suspicious of each other. Gerbert refers to Baldwin and Domenico as if they were mere nosy meddlers in his affairs.

On the witch side, we see what's at play when Gillian scoffs at Diana for hanging out with a vampire. It also gives us an indication on how loyal she is to Peter Knox due to the fact that he is on the congregation. Diana displays her strength when counters Gillian, and stands up to Satu and Peter. We're not sure if it's ignorance of the the hierarchical construct created for creatures by creatures a thousand years ago. Or is it because she's stubborn in her beliefs; people should be taken in individually for their actions, not their species. It appears she inherently trusts Matthew now, and is willing to share this adventure with him. Was it that crazy "I'm gonna eat you, if you don't watch it" display that Matthew provided last episode at the boathouse that triggered it? Diana definitely defies regular logic, for sure!

We also got to meet a daemon. Hamish was fantastic, and was just as effective of stripping Matthew of his guard as he was in the books.

We loved watching Matthew and Diana's relationship begin to bloom in this episode. "You can hear my heart?" -- "All the time." Bad Wolf doesn't seem to care if a clean-up crew has to come in and mop Daemon goo off of the floor. Nope. Anyway, there was definitely a "stay tuned for more of this" vibe that had us captivated in the end.

We'll talk to you next week when we get to see the relationship between this reluctant witch and guarded vampire grow further! Dinner! Blood! Kissing! AAAAAAAH! Oh, and there are some revelations of huge powers, blah, blah, blah, etc. ... πŸ˜‚ (j/k, re: "blah, blah, blah").

It's all about that book! Diana reviewing a manuscript at the Bodleian
In this episode:
Official episode summary:

EPISODE 1
From the press release:

In Oxford’s Bodleian library, brilliant American historian and reluctant witch Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up an ancient magical manuscript, Ashmole 782, which has been missing for centuries, and finds herself confronted by acclaimed geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont, who is determined to get his hands on the book. Diana’s determination not to be frightened by Matthew as he struggles to control his predatory instincts around her fuels a dangerous connection between the two of them. When news of the book’s appearance spreads throughout the world of daemons, vampires and witches hiding in plain sight among humans, the hunt for the witch who summoned it takes on a deadly intensity.
--------

Special thanks to our Patron sponsor for this episode: Sarah Markham

Reference material for some of our musings:

What do you guys think? Coincidence, or an intentional nod?
Diana's attitude throughout the episode:

This crazed face led to the smile below.
This tiny smile is a result of the crazy show above.
In closing...
Well, we covered a lot this episode, but here are the takeaways: Diana Bishop is NOT in the proverbial Kansas anymore. She goes from her nice quiet life in academia to opening Ashmole 782, and entering this whole other world, to which -- whether she likes it or not -- she belongs. From what we can tell (pretending we are coming to this sans the book series, of course), she wants no parts of any of this! From her run-in with this dark, mysterious vampire named Matthew Clairmont, to all of the strange occurrences surrounding her as a result of her encounter with the manuscript.

In the end, we realize Diana is fascinated with Matthew. The smile could've been because he didn't eat her for supper. That's it! She's thankful for his helpful advice on escaping him! ←Just kidding! She really likes him (spoiler) πŸ’—!

From the previews to episode 2, it appears that she's tired of running away, and is finally going to deal with this book and everything that goes with it. And the irony of it all! The only person she's willing to tackle this with is the person she's been avoiding the most in this episode; Matthew. More next week when we meet Juliette, Hamish, Domenico & Gerbert!

Now for our giveaway for EVERYONE:

This, by far, is the most epic giveaway we've ever held. We are giving away a signed 60 page script from Bad Wolf studios of A Discovery of Witches Episode One *pauses for the cheers and fainting*! Who signed it? Oh, only Teresa Palmer & Matthew Goode, that's all. We are also throwing a copy of A Discovery of Witches (the book) with the TV show tie-in cover featuring the very same two creatures! Great package, right? Oh no. As always, we tend to be a bit 'extra'. We'll throw in an Oxford rowing cap in with everything else.

OMG!
Get your Diana on with this Oxford rowing crew cap!
To recap, here's what's up for grabs:
  • A signed script from Bad Wolf - Episode One of A Discovery of Witches
  • A copy of A Discovery of Witches (Headline paperback) with the TV show tie-in cover
  • An Oxford rowing cap (from Oxford, actually!)
UPDATE: Congratulations, Melissa M!

Everything arrived safe and sound! Congratulations, Melissa!
