Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 53! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapters 26 & 27 of Shadow of Night

Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor

Take 53 - The One With the Black Boots and Red Hose

Description: It's a double feature! Yes, we are covering chapters 26 and 27 of Shadow of Night in one shot (it explains the length of the episode). In chapter 26, we meet a new (to us) de Clermont; Verin ... and her husband Ernst. We reunite with present-day Gallowglass, and we see how Philippe continues to look over the family from the grave. We then zip back in time to 1591 in chapter 27 to catch up with Matthew and Diana in Prague. They are establishing their household, settling the kids in, and plotting their course to finally get their hands on Ashmole 782. First stop, Emperor Rudolf's place. On first read, we go in not knowing what to expect, but we come out feeling a bit like Diana -- ugh! Please excuse us. We need to shower now. 😖

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. 😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

Topic:
Chapters 26 and 27 of Shadow of Night
Present day - Somewhere in Berlin ...
  • We meet Verin, and her husband Ernst. We find them at the table. Ernst is serving her wine, and she’s reading the paper . . .
  • A manuscript is found! Randomly! The title: The making of the arbor Dianæ
  • Mary Sidney and her assistant ... THE MAN. 🤬
  • We talk about our theories on the “Friday face”
  • Ernst inquires, Verin dodges direct answers.
  • Melisande - Ysabeau’s name during her “black period.”
  • We sidetrack into convo about Ed Bluemel’s accent; did Americans have a different accent from the British back in those days? Logic says no. The divergence in dialect happened after Marcus's days as a revolutionary, we conclude. Prove us wrong! 😂
  • Verin believed for many years that Philippe was crazy. We'd wager that that was a more comforting idea to her vs. the actual truth.
  • The “Black Sheep” — c'mon, at least meet him first!
  • The next call…Gallowglass!
  • We discuss the “vampire minute,” and the marital/mating status of Ernst and Verin.
  • Hindsight is 20/20 for us when it comes to Gallowglass.
  • Gallowglass attempts to provide Verin assurances re: Marcus, Diana and Matthew.
  • We travel in Gallowglass’s mind as he reminisces about his "Diana's bodyguard" tour of duty during her life so far.
  • Baldwin getting called to Sept-Tour meant it was GO TIME!
  • We discuss our debunked Merman theories…🧜🏻‍♂️
  • The Runes…let’s talk about this!
  • We imagine Diana’s death bed (and the take-a-number line that would form). 😵☠️🙃
1591 - The Empire Prague
  • Matthew lost his hose. We had flashbacks from our own lives.
  •  Diana’s power is advanced enough to locate items.
  • We discuss Diana’s normal fashion choices. Jean’s argument is that she shouldn’t be telling Matthew anything.
  •  The Bosch
  • We discuss the images from the triptych.
  • Lazarus as Matthew ... "oh, you're a vampire? That's cool. I'm gonna draw it now..."
  • Rudolf knows that Matthew is on the Congregation and a Vampire.
  • We crash the wagon … and then recover Jean from the rest stop, and proceed! 🚙
  • Trier witches hanging out in Prague …
  • Uh oh…we took a turn on the road to the historical rabbit hole! We discuss which version of Matthew dealt with Prague previously.
  • Matthew tells Diana about the witches in Prague, and Diana - in turn - spots glimpses of them.
  • Matthew’s got some business in the Old Town. He’s involved in everything!
  • We try to figure out the meaning of the name Malá Strana.
  • The kids arrived! Jack’s had a growth spurt, and looked a little ill.
  • Pierre asks Matthew how his adventures in Old town have been going, and about his luck with Rudolf.
  • Matthew sends Pierre to Rudolf with the altarpiece and a note to see if they are able meet with Rudolf.
  •  Rudolf would be glad to have Matthew over! He just needs to bring the book ... and Diana
  • The three Ravens…the explanation kinds of exposes Gallowglass’s affection for Diana (but we didn't see it on first read!)
  • We discuss all of the people that Rudolf surrounds himself with.
  • Is Gallowglass the Norwegian wolf?
  • We discuss Rudolf’s appearance … and the Habsburg chin.
  • Chinetic™
  • The Noblety™ in Prague is not much different than the Noblety™ in England 🤣
  • We get to the curiosity cabinet. Overstuffed with treasures is a very kind way of saying "hoarder's paradise" 😉. Also? Rudolf and his behavior is GROSS. 🤢
  • Rudolf about A782: Meh! Who knows where it is!
  • Rudolf will see, be silent and hear …

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
This was a Daemon Production
