🎉 The Daemons Welcome 2021 -- With A Giveaway (of course) 😎

Hey, 2021 -- do better.
Goodbye 2020. HELLO, 2021! We are going to just leave our negative comments behind, because there is so much to look forward to! Most immediately, the premiere of Season 2 of A Discovery of Witches! Yay! We'll use this giveaway as sort of a countdown, because it's going to end the morning of the show's premiere in the US and Canada (Sundance Now, Shudder & AMC+). We'd also like to thank an extremely generous patron for donating this valuable unused book set for us to give to one of you! So, let's go ahead and get to that part ...

Up for grabs:

  • A full box set (US/Viking) of the hardcover books covering Diana and Matthew's story, including the very rare commonplace book! This set has been signed by Deborah Harkness, and has never been used! The collection includes: A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life + Diana's commonplace book.
  • FTSIO 2020 swag, because we're not done bad-mouthing 2020! It includes an enamel pin, a car window sticker, and a magnet. Oh, the stories you will tell the children -- about the "before times!"

As usual, we've provided several ways to enter. You'll have one mandatory entry, and optional social media follows. You can also tweet about this daily for more entries -- do one, some, or all!

This giveaway is also open to our international audience. It will run until the morning of the 9th of January, so if you are a Twitter user, you'll have a little time to get multiple entries in! Make sure you read the terms/conditions at the bottom of the post, and enter below.

Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 80! | Our TV Wish-List; Series/Season 3, feat. Dr. Shelli Carter

Hey, we can dream!

Take 80 - The One With the Wishes You Won't Find on Amazon

Description: It's time for Take 80 -- an "On the Tens" episode. This time, we decided to put our wishes out into the universe for Season 3 of A Discovery of Witches (based on The Book of Life.) Yes, we are jumping ahead a bit, but it's filming now, so why not? 😀

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. Topic:
Our Wish-list for Season 3 of A Discovery of Witches (TV series)
  • Things we liked in S1 and hope continues throughout the series
  • Shelli - The expanded world-view.
  • Angela - A continuation of the score and soundscape of S1.
  • Jean - An expansive view of the de Clermont family dynamics.
  • Valerie - More back-stories of daemons.
  • Things we didn’t like in S1, so stop it!
  • Angela - Quit making Matthew the constant hero. We already love him, no need for more!
  • Shelli - Stop taking away the science!
  • Jean - 1) better tailoring 2) Diana’s character weaknesses are very hidden; expose them 3) fear of expansion of Gallowglass’s role.
  • Valerie - the diminishment of vital secondary characters (example: Marthe). Also, the lack of  closure on Gillian!
  • What we’d like to see in S3 (scenes/interactions)
  • Jean - Ransome and New Orleans! More of the Congregation! Walking into the Mayfair house for the first time! The round tower!
  • Shelli - Jack in his blood-rage (the scene with his frenzied painting on the walls).
  • Angela - Hubbard dressing Diana and Matthew down, and how he (Hubbard) stepped up to the plate in securing Jack's care over the centuries.
  • Valerie - Ysabeau being held at Gerbert; she also expresses fear of plumping up Gallowglass’s love-sick melancholy.
  • Scenes that cannot be cut out (in our opinions):
  • Shelli - All of the creatures and their interactions in Chris's lab.
  • Angela - The different locations (they are important). She adds, not a scene, but a request for improved quality of some of the special effects (Satu/Diana flying scene came to mind).
  • Jean - Corra in the Bodleian; the caper is important. Also, cloak porn. Oh, yes, and the Blasted Tree
  • Valerie - Scene with Diana’s confrontation of the creatures on the Congregation with the truth about the Book of Life, and her relationship with it.
  • Add-on wishes
  • Angela - better promotion of Series 2 (at the time of this recording, we didn’t have a lot).
  • Shelli - realistic lab scenes.
  • Jean - Les Revenants.
  • Valerie - wonders how much the TV pacing will be rushed; the Book of Life felt rushed to her, and she hopes they will take some time to flesh out some plots/ongoing themes in the overall story.

Happy Holidays! 2020-style! A Giveaway

🥳 2020 is almost over! That's a big reason to celebrate!🎄

Hello, friends! We are celebrating the end of the year with a huge GIVEAWAY! We wish you all a merry Christmas, a cool Yule, a happy Hanukkah, and a festive whatever your reason for the season! We haven't been very celebratory this year, so we figured we'd make up for it by throwing a blow-out for the holidays.

Each year, when planning this particular giveaway, we'd follow the Phoebe tradition as outlined in chapter 33 of The Book of Life. However, this year hasn't been normal, has it? Nah. We figured a nice escape into the past via Shadow of Night would be just the thing. With this package, we'll time travel with Diana and Matthew, indulge ourselves with much needed self-care, learn to cook as they did in days of yore, and bid 2020 a proper farewell!

🎅 What's in Santa's sleigh:

  • Shadow of Night (Headline UK paperback w/ TV tie-in cover)
  • A Glass cabochon Diana necklace, based on the Hilliard miniature described in the books.
  • A Bath and Body Works duo in the "You're the One" scent. The duo includes a three-wick candle + lotion - (the name reminded us of Timothy's description of Diana). The scent as described on the website: A luxurious blend of soft rose, winter woods and a drop of strawberry nectar.
  • A Thyme and Place - Medieval Feasts and Recipes for the Modern Table, by Tricia Cohen/illustrated by Lisa Graves - you don't have to time-walk to get a taste of the times!
  • Some assorted Daemon swag for your stocking.
  • Finally, as a goodbye to 2020, you can ride your way into 2021 with a FTSIO 2020 prize bundle including the enamel pin, a magnet, and a car window sticker.

Why not leave the present, and join the past? It worked for Matthew and Diana!

As usual, we've provided several ways to enter! You'll have one mandatory entry, a trivia question, optional social media follows, and you can also tweet about this daily for more entries -- do one, some, or all!

This giveaway is also open to our international audience. It will run for 14 days, so if you are a Twitter user, you'll have plenty of time to get multiple entries in! Make sure you read the terms/conditions at the bottom of the post, and enter below.

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 79! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 11 of The Book of Life

Dark? Light? Good? Bad? Where are we going, here?

Take 79 - The One With the Crossroads

Description: Now that Diana, Matthew, Sarah, and Fernando have settled into life in the House, a comfortable routine has been established. Through a little Fernado story-time, we learn a little more about Fernando's life with Hugh and Gallowglass. We observe how Sarah's garden plays a major role in her work as a witch. We witness what an advocate the House is for Sarah's well being (it has a funny way of showing it!) All appears to be well, until Diana discovers the crossroads on her aunt's property. Voices of the dead, the pull of the moon, and the dark powers that beckon her -- all of these things frighten Diana to her core. The real scary part is the epiphany that she actually wants the knowledge/power, and believes that Matthew will hate her for it. And there is that little secret about a bargain made with the Goddess two books ago . . .

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. 😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

"Hellebore makes any disguising spell more effective."
Topic: Chapter 11, The Book of Life
  • Matthew is taking in the news that Rebecca’s powers are very influential on Diana’s — c’mon Matthew!
  • Diana is trying to tempt Matthew into his scientific curiosities 🔬
  • We talk about blood in ink being a common practice (!)✒️
  • DITCH. This time Angela is dragged in. 💥🚙
  • Sarah finally has help around the house! She’s crafted a honey-do list for Diana. No need to call Verizon or AT&T!
  • Fernando had taken over the home and was in charge of its occupants nutritional requirements 🥬
  • We learn that Gallowglass is a world-class slob.
  • Was Fernando covertly preparing them for war?⚔️
  • Meanwhile, the House was waging a successful war against Sarah!🎶
  • Sarah took her frustration out on the house, thus leaving her kindness available for Diana.
  • While on a trip to Sarah’s garden, we encountered a CROSSROADS. EEK 😱
  • We like that the Oneida were brought up in this chapter; we are able to tie other books together with this one.
  • We discuss the low-key derision for Sarah’s form of magic.
  • Diana turns down Sarah’s invitation to go into the garden at night….Diana is scared of the voices.
  • Diana is pulled in by the voices, and heads out anyway! Matthew stops her and waits for her to explain.
  • The secret of the Goddess’ bargain comes to light! 🍿
  • We compare this scene to Matthew’s chapel scene in SON
  • We discuss the aspects of the Goddess that and their representation from ADOW: The power of the tree and the earth flowed through my veins, an unexpected offering of life to a vampire on the verge of death. I smiled in gratitude at the huntress and the ghost of the old woman, nourishing Matthew with my body. I was the mother now, the third aspect of the goddess along with the maiden and the crone. With the goddess’s help, my blood would heal him.
  • Diana explains the whole “life for a life” thing.
  • Matthew the fixer comes to the “rescue”
  • Matthew wants Diana to call the Goddess up and fix this thing. Diana: Dude, that’s not how any of this works! Matthew’s calling up the Goddess harkens us to Fred Flintstone calling the Great Gazoo.
  • You’re mine, and I’m not done with you yet!
  • Sooooo…it turns out this deal with the crossroads wasn’t so ominous.
  • We discuss the chain (related to the Fleetwood Mac song)! Not janky, this time. It was life that brought them there.
  • A present was waiting for them in house…PS the house is terrible at wrapping presents 🎁
  • It turns out to be Rebecca’s infamous spell book! It kind of disappointed us, because it turned out to be a composition notebook!📓
  • Rebecca called up the dead to ask mundane teen questions — about boys!💞
  • The caul…ewww🤮.
  • Diana quit running from her formidable powers, therefore she’s ready for the book!
  • “Do not refuse me because I am dark and shadowed,” “As I am the end, my lover is the beginning..
  • FIN

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
