Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 76! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 8 of The Book of Life

Got rage? Pound in some fence posts. That'll fix it!

Take 76 - The One With the Unsolicited Advice

Description: Instead of beating himself up, Matthew has taken to beating posts into the ground with the guise of repairing Sarah's failing fence. Well, we all know that our Matthew's got some issues! And if he doesn't beat himself up enough, Fernando is there to assist. Fernando knows him pretty well though, so he suggests Matthew take up the science-y stuff concerning his and Diana's genetics to occupy his mind. Miriam breaks in to inject her own 2 cents (she speaks for us!), and this chapter winds down with a visit from "bulldozer" Vivian Harrison. We enjoyed recording this chapter, we hope you enjoy listening to it! Also, in our Save it For the Show segment there's some TV News; we do a bit of whiplash time-walking to make sure you are up to date with the latest and greatest (TRAILER! YAY!)

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. 😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

When googling "blue Volvo," this one seemed to suit "bulldozer" Vivian Harrison!
Topic: Chapter 8, The Book of Life
  • We discuss our new observations concerning Fernando’s counseling.
  • “Thwack!”πŸ”¨
  • They may be in Madison, but Baldwin still holds the leash!
  • A vampire fence guy!
  • Matthew, we agree. Benjamin should’ve been taken care of a long time ago.🀨
  • The was a family meeting among the de Clermont men. Obey or else! Threats are involved, because some of these brothers are mutinous.
  • Gallowglass being shaken indicates how serious the situation they are in actually is. 😳
  • There’s a lot of pot meet kettle in this episode. Fernando is up first.
  • Matthew takes a moment to feel sorry for himself … “Diana’s aunts never approved of me….” MATTHEW! STOP IT!
  • We think that Matthew was obsessive prior to becoming a vampire.
  • Ohhhh…Matthew the pleasure delayer really did want Diana to be a vampire. A part of him did, anyway.
  • Angela observes that this conversation is very similar to Hamish’s conversation with Matthew in ADOW
  • Fernando is frightened for Matthew’s unborn kids; we disagree and believe this is a stretch — but to be fair, we have the insight of Time’s Convert.πŸ€ͺ
  • How did Fernando become such a expert on blood rage? Was it just Matthew, or has he observed it in others?
  • Val thinks Matthew has never wanted to lead anything, never mind his own scion.
  • Focus on the science! Even “dumb” Gallowglass thinks so (Fernando didn’t actually say that, but that’s what it sounded like!) He suggests that he collaborate with Miriam, and get to sciencing! πŸ”¬
  • Miriam dials in as our mental savior!
  • Miriam thinks that may have been Benjamin snooping around Diana’s rooms! Wow, we didn’t remember this our first read.
  • OOOOH! That’s why he couldn’t tell Father Hubbard was his grandson!!!πŸ’‘
  • Miriam snaps at Matthew (well deserved).
  • “Even monsters can change…” Martyr Matthew is back!
  • Miriam ponders the firedrake. She's intrigued!πŸ‰
  • Matthew is keeping some info from Miriam, and Miriam can totally tell. 🀨
  • Miriam’s mike-drop. DAMN. 🎀
  • VIVIAN! Yay!
  • Goddess preserve us from handsome vampires πŸ§›πŸ»‍♂️
  • Diana spells out all of their problems in a few short sentences.
  • Lugnasah, dammit, Sarah you’re going!
  • Turns out the Bishops weren’t hiding sh*t!
  • It seems Sarah is feeling more herself!
  • A little spat.πŸ₯Š
  • Pots calling kettles black again!
  • A little make-up session.πŸ–€
  • FIN

Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 75! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 7 of The Book of Life

Meh, we went for the obvious today!

Take 75 - The One With the Spice Rack

Description: It's Sol in Leo! We're back in Madison, but things aren't quite correct. Matthew's moody, Sarah's broody, and it seems it's up to Diana to get this place back into working order. We meet the locals (witches) at the Cost Cutter, and Smitty at the Post Office! This a short chapter, but it starts us on the path to the larger things to come.

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. Crock-potting 70's style!

Topic:
Chapter 7, The Book of Life

  • It's Sol in Leo!
  • We all agree that we are happy about being out of “Crabby Cancer”
  • We start in Sarah’s still room, and Diana is fighting with the window! We see that this is Sarah’s sacred space. We think this is another side of Sarah, maybe even her truest self.
  • We compare the old pulpit to one of Jean’s colleagues, and Gerbert’s from a later chapter in this book.
  • A discussion of the 70’s decorating palette. Avocado, Persimmon, Brown and Harvest Gold! These colors have all survived in Sarah’s house.
  • Blenders, slow cookers, coffee grinders, and coffee makers are all the tools of the modern witch.
  • Diana thinks about the past and Mary’s mural, and all of a sudden, time starts spooling!⏰
  • Corra made it to NY
  • We loved the confrontation with Tabitha. 😾
  • Fernando reports on Matthew’s mental health. He also laments (and informs us) about Philippe. Diana “I’m getting the feeling you didn’t like the guy…” πŸ€”
  • We weigh the pros and cons of Philippe assigning Matthew as the family assassin.
  • We discuss why Diana is not using her magic to clean the still room; we conclude she’s still wary about performing magic in that space.
  • Sad, sad, Sarah. Boo! ☹️
  • The ghosts are gone, and it’s because Emily just died, and maybe they didn’t want to be hassled with questions, OK?!🀨
  • The blasted tree, and it’s strange fruit🌳
  • Diana is off to go shopping and Sarah is left to her sad sack self.
  • We discuss Sarah’s NEW BROOM - Val gets nitpicky. Anyway, the new broom is to replace Sarah’s old beat-down civic. 🚘
  • The witch ball is meant to replace the bumper stickers. LET SARAH KEEP HER BUMPER STICKERS!
  • Diana stops at the post office and sets the town abuzz.
  • Smitty is the Chatty Cathy of Madison…and we devolve into a discussion about Ace Hardware!
  • Oh…the post maul talk. DITCH!πŸ’₯πŸš™
  • Smitty; Diana exits stage left on this conversation. πŸ˜’
  • At the Cost Cutter in nearby Hamilton, we notice a minivan. Val gets a little heated talking about minivans.
  • Diana does a binding spell on the witch ball, and gets busted. Enter Vivian Harrison!
  • We discuss how nosy the coven seemed; but we just concluded it was a small town.
  • The old family names!
  • We speak to Abby, Caleb…both magical and part of the coven.
  • We discuss the Bodleian and the CostCutter as creature meeting places when some creature intrigue crops up.
  • Diana surprises us and herself “I think I need your help…” Wow! Progress!
  • The humans start noticing, so they set a date at Sarah’s in 20 minutes.
  • Back home, Diana tries some magic. It works!
  • “Welcome home, granddaughter” πŸ‘»
  • FIN

Sarah's got a brand-new broom!

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 74! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 6 of The Book of Life

Oh right! THAT GUY.

Take 74 - The One With the Remote Guest

Description: It's time for a formal dinner! Fun, right? Let's answer this question as Lady Daemons: "Nah, Bruh." Eventually, we get to a calm period when people were able to break bread without killing each other, and that's nice -- until the ultimate party-crasher dialed it in. Yikes.

In typical fashion -- when this book is concerned -- this episode is packed! So prepare for a long ride in the wagon. We will stop for pee-breaks, but pack snacks!

SPOILER ALERT! Topic:
Chapter 6, The Book of Life
  • We are pretty much done with this session at Sept-Tours. The sniping, griping and all of it! #OVERIT!
  • We discuss the dinner plans for the farewell. This is Diana’s second rodeo at dinner plans; she's ready! πŸ˜‚
  • OH NOES! Matthew’s beard! RIP
  • Doesn’t everyone have a vampire seamstress?
  • The disguising spell turns out to be controversial! Really, Matthew?
  • The role of the consort - can Diana handle it? We think she can. And Matthew is making a lot of assumptions here.
  • The parental roles….oh dear, what a convo!
  • Gallowglass and his formal wear 🏍
  • We decide Sarah is uncomfortable at this dinner, and her lack of being able to read the room causes her to blurt out uncomfortable observations.
  • The arrow, and Ysabeau’s comments on it.
  • Baldwin, enters and the immediate clashes between him and Diana.
  • The dinnerware…🍽
  • Phoebe approves of the table seating.
  • Dinner commences, and eventually everyone was able to settle in without killing each other.
  • Marcus and Phoebe’s announcement; “The old fashioned way”
  • Phoebe is gonna be a vampire! Whoa! Matthew forbids it! Marcus: “It’s not up to you, dude. It’s up to Baldwin” OUCH.
  • All of the intimate mating secrets are getting spilled.
  • The phone rings …
  • BENJAMIN!
  • Benjamin is dropping hints as to what he’s up to.
  • Matthew calls Miriam, and she’s clueless that Benjamin has her phone.πŸ“±
  • Tudo ben contigo? = you good?
  • Baldwin has some things to say about Matthew’s handling of Benjamin in the past.
  • Baldwin takes control of this situation with a few proclamations and leaves the room.
  • Diana decides that they are going to the Bishop house. Matthew, Diana, Sarah and Fernando will be headed to NY. Diana theorizes that Rebecca had the answers, and that’s where they’ll find them.
  • Finding the missing pages of the Book of Life becomes the priority.
  • Phoebe hAz some useful sKiLlZ
  • Benjamin shares an appreciation for witches with Matthew…we thought this meaning was obvious, but it seems to be confusing the book's characters?
  • FIN

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Meet Greg Coulton - Illustrator Extraordinaire

Sky TV's announcement for the UK Release for Series 2 of A Discovery of Witches (January 2021) got us to reminiscing about the fabulous UK print campaign featured in newspapers, magazines and on public transportation in and around London, and fantasizing about what the next one may look like.

The individual responsible, Greg Coulton, really didn't get the credit his beautiful work deserves. An illustrator, designer and typographer, Greg has been  meticulously hand drawing intricate logos and branding campaigns for a variety of clients for over 20 years. His designs are ornate and fantastical, rife with Baroque detailing. He lives by the maxim, "The devil is in the details" and it shows in the campaign he designed for ADOW, mining traditional alchemical texts for inspiration. His reinventions are so rich and detailed, we went down the rabbit hole to his sources.

Let's break down some of the images and their inspirations, shall we?

The Serpent of Arabia - The Ripley Scroll

Venice (location of the Congregation drawn in Mary Sidney's

Putre Factio ("Purification") - Johann Mylius

Anatomia coitus - Johann Mylius ("Anatomia Auri")

The Chemical Wedding - Splendor Solis

The Alchemical Child - Kawaii (love the modern influence here)

The Arbor Dianae - straight from Mary Sidney's lab

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 73! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 5 of The Book of Life

Welp! It's a thing that's happened before! Surprised? Matthew and Diana sure were.

Take 73 - The One With The Surprise Baby

Description: Vampires and witches having babies?! Meh, that's old news to Ysabeau. But it's new to Matthew and Diana ... and us, kind of! The secrets in this chapter have us all reeling, and it's quite a ride. This is a long one, so pack your snacks, because we have two segments with TV news! One recent, and another from about a month ago. This is a Daemon time-walk episode!

Topic:
Chapter 5, The Book of Life
  • Diana is experiencing what the head of the family does without the awe of the holder of the title. The result? Bitter!
  • Baldwin is doing all of the things that Philippe did as the head, but Baldwin doesn’t hold Diana’s regard like Philippe did.
  • Nathanial and Sophie are in Australia to stay with Agatha, and put on a good front for the Congregation.
  • Phoebe is backing Baldwin in his decisions.
  • Once again, busting into the rooms are NOT exclusive to Baldwin
  • Family pedigrees? Secrets?!
  • Sept-Tour has oubliettes…it was all the rage as a must have accessory in old-timey castles…
  • “Hi!”
  • That fancy vampire security!
  • Vampire law according to Godfrey
  • The answer is A SCION! Gallowglass (as always πŸ˜‘ ) spilled the beans
  • The lawyer Daemon is offended that no one wants to be the family lawyer!
  • The possibility of being a broke vampire. Not enticing!
  • Sire vs. Father
  • Rebel Marcus!
  • Matthew is kind of the voice of reason (what, what, WHAT?!)
  • THE ERASURE!
  • The “terrifying creature” was he terrifying to Diana in SON?
  • The “official” pedigree … Benjamin was disappeared.
  • The story of Benjamin in the “official” copy.
  • Disavowment of a vampire = spellbinding of a witch
  • Benjamin was trading in seeeecretssssss….
  • Why didn’t Matthew just kill him?! Matthew wanted him to suffer.
  • Say what you want about Benjamin, he thought and stayed alive…ala Philippe.
  • A change in the ARC to the final version (we explore after the chapter).
  • Bloodrage, Marcus was unaware!😳
  • Hamish doesn’t want to see what’s in front of him, despite the stories Matthew told him in his house in Scotland, long ago (well, not so long ago, but it feels like it!)
  • Bloodrage vampire were culled. Their kids too!
  • New Orleans! Poor Marcus.
  • Ysabeau tells her story …
  • Philippe’s pretty version of the story was the one told previously
  • The blood rage first showed in Matthew
  • Ysabeau feels like people know about the blood rage…
  • The return of the vampire murders (in our minds!)
  • Phillipe’s official story…we wonder how many vampires just hushed about it out of fear from Philippe
  • The puzzle will get put together eventually.
  • A 6 month old killer! πŸ‘ΆπŸ”ͺ
  • Benjamin, the witch and the BABY! Pull up a chair for a story, Matthew.
  • The blunt version of the vampire baby’s story as told by Ysabeau...
  • The blame game begins. Sarah, surprisingly, calms the situation down.
  • New scatter plans…🧳
  • Matthew has been looking for a cure this whole time!πŸ§ͺ News to Diana! News to US!
  • Marcus thinks a scion will fix this mess…
  • Marcus has a proposal for Matthew…
  • FIN
