Partying in Pompeii

If you've been following us at all, you know that the Daemons are suckers for a good museum. Our trip to Great Britain was no different, and when Angela discovered that "Pompeii: The Last Supper" would be at The Ashmolean, it went on our must do list! Featuring over 300 objects, it focused on the Pompeian's love of food and entertaining putting a unique spin on the objects displayed, which included actual food, literally frozen in time.

We found the following items especially compelling:

Romans loved snails long before escargot was a thing.
Bread just out of the oven.
Romans loved boar. Roasted, stewed, braised. They even had their own version of bacon called petaso.
Pompeii was known for its opulence and the wealth of its residents is obvious to this day. One way to put it on display was through the construction of elaborate gardens with water features.

This ornamental turtle spewed water as part of a larger fountain.
This valve was part of the plumbing system that supplied water to the elaborate fountains. Its design has not changed much over the passing centuries.

This mosaic from The House of Geometric Mosaics celebrated Pompeii's proximity to the sea and its love of sea life and seafood
This mosaic floor from The House of the Vestals has a fatalistic flair. Nothing says "Let's party!" quite like a skeleton bringing enough wine for the whole party!
Highly detailed, vivid frescoes are everywhere in Pompeii, and a number of them were on display. These were a few of the Lady Daemons' favorites:

Rabbit eating figs
Detail depicting a theatrical mask from a larger fresco found in the House of the Golden Bracelet
Europa and the Bull from the House of Jason (What, what, what?!)
A convivum aka "Girls Night In." The wine is flowing freely, and the husbands are out (probably at the brothel, being someone else's problem 😏)
Our first egg was none other that Hercules aka Philippe. He was so popular that the neighboring city was named Herculaneum. Legend has it that Hercules did battle with giants in the area and imprisoned them in the mountain. The volcanic activity was the giants trying to escape - or so said the humans.

Hercules depicted as a youth. This statute would be displayed in the larium.
The larium was typically off of the receiving area of the villa and  may have looked like this.
No, that's not the Fruit of the Loom guy (below) -- that's Bacchus, the God of wine keeping watch over the vineyards which grow along the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius! Assisting him was an agathosdaemon was a spirit (daemon) of the vineyards and grainfields in ancient Greek religion. The Romans also considered them companion spirits or muses. We're feeling pretty confident that is is also the inspiration for the name of our Daemon Queen, Agatha Wilson.

The agathosdaemon in snake form.
Detail - Bacchus and his panther
Isis Fortuna protecting a man flanked by the agathodaemones - apparently Roman deities even kept a a look out during "private time". The inscription: CACATOR CAVE MALU[m] (‘shitter beware the evil [eye]’)

Speaking of the evil eye, this bronze statue of Apollo (below) from the House of Gaius Julius Polybius, had all three of us freaked out. But not as much as the Resin Lady of Oplontis. Her remains were preserved in resin down to the pins in her hair and the beads in her hand, along with the horrifying tragic energy of her final moments. Her sadness was palpable, and we wished her peace.

But it's not the Daemon way to close on such a spooky, somber note. We just need to point out that even museum curators have a cheeky 12 year old hiding inside. And they can't resist a good dick joke!

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 72! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 4 of The Book of Life

The key to it all... (OK, maybe not THE key, but A key 😝)

Take 72 - The One With Congregation Revelation

Description: Through a series of tussles (verbal/physical) between the head of the de Clermont family and the Grand Master of the Knights of Lazarus, we finally learn who in the family actually holds that elusive seat on the Congregation, and where the HQ is located -- REVELATION! After we've examined all of the information in front of us, we finally understand why the rag-tag group of creatures must scatter in a week's time. As we go, these chapters continue to be dense with information, so naturally the episodes are longer! Take it in bites, or gobble the whole thing! P.S. Don't be a "Karen," wear your masks, and let's get out of this mess!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. 😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 71! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 3 of The Book of Life

One view of a the library at ChΓ’teau-Dauphin (Deb's inspiration for Sept-Tours in the book series)

Take 71 - The One With the Quorum

Description: Family Meeting. Time: 4 am. Place: The de Clermont library, Sept-Tours. RSVP: N/A. Be there, or else. That sums it up, doesn't it? We learn that we STILL need to learn a lot about vampires (geez, Matthew)! This is a long one, but we had some things to say . . . stay tuned during Save It For the Show. We saved plenty for the show. This is another long episode, guys; it's just going to be that way for a while since 2020 continues to surprise and (DISMAY🀬) delight.

We we ponder if confronting Baldwin in this meeting would be as intimidating as it would be appearing in Royal Court.

  • Couldn’t this meeting be an email, guys?
  • Banked strength - Baldwin and Matthew are more alike than we thought.
  • Meet Verin, Diana.
  • Baldwin just happened to be in the neighborhood, and πŸ’₯ BLOOD VOW!
  • Baldwin wonders out loud about the spells that Diana could’ve used to obtain Philippe’s blood vow.
  • Story time, Baldwin. Diana and Matthew time-walked!
  • We wonder if they are depending on legend lore vs. actually witnessing a blood vow being bestowed on a warmblood before?
  • Baldwin and Verin outline what actually being a verified TRUE de Clermont requires ...
  • We discuss the inconsistency in Fernando’s description between The Book of Life and Time’s Convert.
  • Jean notes Fernando’s sh*t stirring.
  • Meet Fernando, Diana.
  • Enter Gallowglass to provide clarity, and make some unintentional trouble between Verin and Baldwin.
  • Verin tells the story.
  • Diana is adamant that she doesn’t need Baldwin or Verin’s recognition. DAMN IT.
  • Matthew, you didn’t have time? Really?
  • Diana STILL has a lot to learn about vampires. πŸ§›πŸ»‍♂️
  • Verin offers to school her about the act of bestowing a blood vow.
  • Baldwin makes a starting offer.
  • A pedigree? New to Diana, us, but NOT MATTHEW πŸ™„.
  • Baldwin throws a low blow.
  • Matthew takes it from verbal sniping to physical threatening.
  • ASSASIN!!! 😳
  • Verin…ouch that stings!
  • Matthew … DAMN…
  • Of course a fight ensues 🀣
  • Diana saves Matthew with some witch wind πŸ’¨
  • Matthew does have the stones, Verin.
  • Baldwin: Who knows, maybe they’ll kill them, and we won’t have to worry about ANY of this😬
  • Meeting adjourned, and we learn that Gallowglass has been watching Diana for a long time.
  • Alain! Yay!
  • He’s got the GOODS. And the $$$$!πŸ€‘
  • Philippe’s letter.
  • Diana’s cords have gone wild! 🐍

It peaked at #46 in the UK singles chart for three weeks after re-release in February 1978.The song is referred to as simply "Rhiannon" on Fleetwood Mac albums, except on the 2003 and 2016 remasters of Fleetwood Mac and the 2018 compilation Don't Stop - 50 Years, on which the title "Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win)" is used. The single version also used this title when it was originally released to the European and American markets. Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 70! | Character Study - Personality 2.0

Let's try this personality thing again, shall we?

Take 70 - The One With Pseudo Science

Description: We're "on the tens" once again, and it's time for a character study! We thought that this would be an excellent way of handling the subject this go-around. We're revisiting our personality episode from way back when (2017), and doing a updated version; Personality 2.0, if you will. When you hear our process, you'll understand the title very well. It's pseudo science at its righteous best! We will be studying Kit, Susanna, Ransome, Fernando, Vivian, Andrew and closing out with Miriam as the headliner. We hope you enjoy listening, as much as we did recording it!

SPOILER ALERT! * Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 69! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 2 of The Book of Life

This title was a tough one to illustrate, so here's a caged parakeet. Pretend he/she/it is demented!

Take 69 - The One With the Demented Parakeet

Description: A restless Matthew Clairmont makes the rounds and pays a few castle calls to the current residents of Sept-Tours. He's on edge, and his friends and family -- rightly -- welcome him back with wary caution. In the end, it takes Diana to bring him to his center (as he does for her). BUT, there's one family member who wonders out loud (to say the least) why Diana Bishop is harboring the blood song of his long-dead father, Philippe de Clermont. Like Matthew, the Daemons are also restless souls in this pandemic, so they take the opportunity to talk A LOT, thus the lengthy episode! Take it in shifts, or binge it at once! No judgement! Enjoy!

Topic:
Chapter 2, The Book of Life
  • The omniscient narrative describes Matthew as a bit of a loner/black sheep within the family.
  • As a step-father, Philippe is no Mike Brady!
  • Gallowglass and Corra!
  • “Fucking Firedrake!” YAS!!!
  • Raiders of the Lost F*cks!
  • Sir Vagabond (sound the royal horns!)
  • Reasoning with Corra is as useless as reasoning with Diana
  • We discuss Corra as a representation of Diana’s energy.
  • Hamish!
  • The thought of people having to choose between Matthew and Baldwin; it’s demonstrated by Matthew’s petty refusal of Baldwin’s claret.
  • Hamish points out to Matthew that even though everyone is quaking with fear around him, it was Matthew is the one whose the most scared.
  • They discuss Marcus’ and Phoebe’s relationship
  • Hamish gives him a deserved earful!
  • Hamish remains optimistic about Matthew’s goodness.
  • Marcus and Phoebe
  • Marcus is using Philippe’s old office 😳
  • Phoebe is a bold young lady!
  • We learn some vampire rules via some minor missteps by Phoebe (Marcus didn’t “school” her properly)
  • Diana gets a new doctor!πŸ‘¨‍⚕️
  • We question why Phoebe is fascinating? We are told she is, but we’d love to see examples.
  • Fernando!
  • Matthew gets examined by Fernando . . . just in case that pesky blood rage is out of control!
  • The blood rage has gotten worse, not better! Yikes!
  • Fernando scolds and relays that Ysabeau should’ve locked Matthew in a tower to avoid the mating of Matthew and Diana; this sounded familiar reading about Matthew’s objections to Marcus and Phoebe
  • The bloodsong! This is new!
  • Louisa would have heard it! She must’ve been bat-shit crazy to ignore Philippe’s blood song.
  • Enter Gallowglass again!
  • The smoking, and Gallowglass’ humorous musings about medical school and university
  • Back to Matthew’s rooms. Ysabeau performs a crazy-check on Matthew like Fernando did.
  • Matthew listens to Diana’s breathing, and the micro animal kingdom outside of the chateau.
  • Time standing still = DOING IT! πŸ˜‰
  •  We crashed into a serious ditch right here. πŸ’₯πŸš™
  • We discuss the appearance of a new marking on Diana’s back — when did it appear? Was it representative of the Riply’s scroll, or Diana’s dream when she lost her first child— we're fresh out of theories!
  • BALDWIN!
  • FIN
Sèvres vase with the lion. Yeah, Corra got that one too!
