Daemons Discuss - Podcast: TV Review! | A Discovery of Witches Season 1, Episode 6

TV Show Review - A Discovery of Witches - Season 1, Episode 6

Description: Matthew needs to find Diana ... and so does Baldwin. Their motivations clash in a vampiric display of will. Meanwhile, somewhere in a crumbling castle, Diana has to stave off a sadistic determined witch from getting her secrets. Gerbert is skulking about hoping to get his own time with Diana, and this brings us to alarm because we know what he does to witches (Meridiana, anyone?) ๐Ÿ˜ฑ! Join us as we watch these events unravel! Also? Hello Sigasmund. From this episode on, you are no longer nameless. We shall call you "Siggie," OK?

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way when it is released in the US/Canada. ๐Ÿ˜Š  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

EPISODE 6
From the press release:

Satu brutally tortures Diana in Gerbert’s isolated castle ruins. Matthew, now sworn to hunt down and kill anyone who tries to harm Diana, attempts a daring airborne rescue mission with Baldwin in tow, but they are too late to prevent Satu invoking dark magic in a bid to open up Diana and see the magic inside her. As Diana is forced to confront the idea that she might have been spellbound, she wonders what kind of monster she is. When Sophie confesses that she is a daemon born of witches, this news of cross-species offspring leaves Agatha reeling as she ponders the implications for all their lives.

These two, right here ... ๐Ÿคจ
If Satu saw this look on Diana's face, she'd run back to the woods and stay there. Just sayin'
In closing...
Gerbert was not the only one impressed by 'a witch in flight'. We stayed glued to the TV as Satu dropped Diana approx. 20 feet on to the grounds of La Pierre. The torment, the torture, and the fervor was a lot to take in!

Back at Sept-Tours we see a bit of our beloved "hot mess" Matthew as he confronts Baldwin, tries to come up with a solid plan to find Diana, and has to endure the piteous gazes from Ysabeau and Marthe.

The Congregation -- Sigasmund, he has a name! Our new pal, Siggie™ appears clueless about the underhanded machinations and lies from Peter, and seems an unwitting witness to the lead witch's attempts to squirm out of a tough spot with Baldwin.

Those spider web dreams! Lightbulb! ๐Ÿ’ก We realize in the oubliette scene that the spider webs shown in previous episodes were actually her spell bindings, and we speculate that the spider in the dream represented the fear of her magic. Minds blown!

Diana's rescue goes unimpeded, and to our surprise, Gerbert and Satu didn't go back to regroup as a unit. They each skulked out of castle separately. Satu has been rendered powerless, and we are really surprised that Gerbert creeps out like a robber with a sack full of valuables, instead of confronting Baldwin and Matthew (he could've at least faked some excuse!) Satu escapes with Meridiana to free her (we loved that scene, because it showed a lot of depth in Satu's character), and Gerbert comes back later to the scene of the incident to sniff (๐Ÿ˜ฑ?!) the evidence. Upon return, Baldwin and Matthew return to their happy place aka their sibling rivalry. We observe the conflicting interests involved; Baldwin being the head of the family, and Matthew being the Grand Master of the Knights of Lazarus.

In the end, Diana realized she survived Satu, and was able to hang on to her secrets. The de Clermont's reveal to her that they think she may have been spell bound. Whoops! The aunts have some explaining to do! Join us next week when we meet the aunts, Tabitha, and the House to get some answers!

G-D VIP! Actually, the story of the aircraft registration lettering system is rather dull ...

On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: TV Review! | A Discovery of Witches Season 1, Episode 5

TV Show Review - A Discovery of Witches - Season 1, Episode 5

Description: Ysabeau spills the tea on Matthew's past, we get to see vampires hunting, we watch the Congregation plotting (together and against one another!), and we learn how Matthew actually feels about Diana. There's other things thrown in there like the Knights of Lazarus, mating, suicide, and schmexy science-y stuff.  Our wary hearts are eventually gifted with the reunion of Matthew and Diana! And then, CLIFFHANGER! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

EPISODE 5
From the press release:

Gillian pays a heavy price for her disloyalty to Diana, but not before news that vampires are studying witch DNA reaches Knox. The fall-out threatens the fragile equilibrium between creatures and the focus is on ending Matthew and Diana’s relationship whatever the cost. Agatha treads a careful line of democracy at the Congregation, but Nathaniel continues to instigate daemon direct-action. Ysabeau relies on shock tactics to expel Diana until Matthew returns with breathtaking news about Diana’s DNA. Diana and Matthew are finally united in love, only for the unexpected to happen

From our Facebook page
In closing...
This episode was chock full of information when it came to Matthew's past. We also get acquainted with the de Clermont's reliance on testing loyalty to the family, and their members. We got to see Ysabeau's story time played out in a different way for the TV show, but Diana gets the essentials; vampires are dangerous hunters - check ✔, Matthew hasn't mated since Blanca - check ✔, he had a son (and you can't have his kids, Diana -- BTW, OUCH!) - check✔, suicidal and unhinged at times - check✔. Ysabeau is essentially asking her, "are you up for this?!" Diana's response? "Whatever. Yawn."

Gillian: ๐ŸŽผSHE HAD IT COMING!๐ŸŽถ  C'mon Gillian, everyone knows snitches get stitches.

The Congregation -- as revered as this institution is in the creature world, it turns out to be an organizational mess, with skewed alliances, back-stabbing, double dealing, and overall morale degradation. What's not to love about this delicious group of creatures constantly side-eyeing each other? Fantastic! We are so happy to be treated with a behind-the-curtains look at this collection of leaders (๐Ÿ˜ฑ).

We enjoyed Matthew and Diana's reunion, but it was too ... (cough) ... efficient for our taste! Overall good (Goode?) feelings all around, until --- WHOOSH!

Description: We meet Ysabeau, Marthe, Baldwin, and we get to see The Congregation assemble. Seriously, what could go wrong? Dinner, dancing, glaem, romance, ALL fantastic! Until Domenico shows up ... It's time to meet Ysabeau!
In this episode:
Official episode summary:

EPISODE 4
From the press release:

Matthew’s hope of keeping Diana safe at Sept-Tours appears short-lived as Ysabeau refuses to welcome the warmblood under her roof. Knox calls an emergency meeting of the Congregation to denounce Matthew for abducting a witch but Matthew’s ferocious older brother Baldwin plays a careful game to maintain control
in the face of Gerbert foretelling the end of the de Clermonts – and throws Diana to the lions. Diana isn’t the only witch facing persecution. Satu pays a shocking price for her curiosity when Knox discovers she has been searching through the Witches’ Archive and learned his guilty secret. Meanwhile, things turn nasty in Oxford for Marcus and Miriam as Juliette attacks.

Those of you on the #TeamBaldwin bus, strap in.
Peter is not winning our hearts and minds here. He's putting us in a position of defending Satu!
Well, Matthew ... hiding away at your mom's was a good idea ... at the time. Whoops!
Although, not what we pictured in the books, the end result was both spectacular and heartbreaking.
In closing...
Where to start? Well, let's start with Ysabeau. Ysabeau is not so pleased that her son has brought home a witch, and it seems her inner thought bubble is a bit leaky when she chides that "modern warmbloods are so poorly educated..." -- and that's in the first few minutes of meeting Diana! But in this remote place in France, Diana and Matthew are allowed to have some peace, and get to know each other a little more.

In the meantime, the Congregation is meeting. What's on the agenda? Diana and Matthew. Poor Baldwin. He cannot escape the drama that his brother has served a heaping plate of.

Peter did not appreciate Satu's contradiction in the chamber, so he teaches her a lesson. He's got us feeling bad for Satu! One would have to be REALLY evil for us to feel that way!

Back at Sept Tours, we got to see horseback riding (didn't they both look ecstatic while galloping across the field?), dinner, dancing -- and the magic that went with it! What spell has this show put on US?!

But then ... DOMENICO. Domenico has arrived to Sept Tours on a congregation errand; he's to collect Diana and bring her to the congregation. Welp, Matthew made sure that didn't happen. Domenico limped away with without any success.

After a discussion with Ysabeau, Matthew decides to end this 'fling' with Diana now. An incredulous Diana cannot believe Matthew is worrying about an ancient rule made by ancient creatures. But then Matthew finds out the lab has been broken into. Time to go, leave Diana with Ysabeau, and head back to Oxford. We feel Diana was drawing the collective tears of fans when she conjured that witchwater in that heart-breaking scene we were left with.

Join us next week when we discuss Diana's time with her babysitters, Ysabeau and Marthe. Oh, there may be other stuff too. Who knows! ๐Ÿ˜

Magical sparkles or dust motes? You decide!

Official episode summary:

EPISODE 3
From the press release:

Domenico takes information he’s extracted from Satu to menacing vampire Gerbert, who gains the advantage he has been waiting for. After sending Juliette into the world to do his bidding, Gerbert consults with Meridiana, the witch whom he keeps in thrall, but what does the prophecy she delivers mean? In Oxford, Diana refuses to help Knox realise his supremacist longing to destroy the vampires and answers his threats with such a violent force of untamed elemental power, as to set in motion a wider chain of events that bring her closer to Matthew but place her in even greater jeopardy.

Aspects of the Goddess in the painting? Twin babies? Are we just looking at this thing too closely? Ok, just look at Matthew, then. ๐Ÿ˜†
Depiction of a computer nerd? It requires 2 or more screens!
Alexa prototype?
In closing...
All. Of. The. Goodness.

In the opening, we check out Matthew doing some reconnaissance for Diana; he scopes out the library and assesses there are way too many creatures watching for Diana to be safe. Why is he worried about this? As we’ve said in previous episodes, this is not just about the book. Especially not for Matthew, anymore! He’s deluded himself into thinking that he can just hang out with Diana with very little consequence. Both Gillian and Miriam remind our protagonists that precisely the opposite is true.

We also get more of a glimpse of daemons and what’s going on with them. Apparently, the congregation doesn’t like them hanging out together — doing things quietly seems to be a thing that daemons haven’t mastered. This all falls under the cloak of “staying hidden from the humans.”

Speaking of the humans, it seems that not all humans are clueless of creature existance. We meet the congregation's keeper, the human, Rico Jaen. Book readers, is he a replacement or a relative to Rima?

Sarah and Emily are growing increasingly concerned about Diana. Gerbert and Domenico do some plotting to bring the de Clermonts to heel. Marcus is doing some jovial Marcus-ing. Gillian and Miriam are hell bent on not-so-subtlely reminding their friends of 'the rules.' Satu seems to be on a private quest to get her own answers, and Peter is not above barging in on Diana's date-night prep, and later enlisting fellow witches to corner Diana into doing his bidding. Yikes.

We find out what motivates Diana’s magic through Matthew’s power of observation. We also witness the execution of her magic to not only protect a precious manuscript, but also to protect herself and her friend Sean from power-hungry Peter.

๐Ÿ’— → What else is there really to say here?
This synopsis didn't even touch the romantic aspects of this episode (swoon!) Well, honestly, fifteen paragraphs of gushy swooning wouldn't properly convey the feels we feel, so we'll spare you the melty mess! Anyway, in the end, Diana and Matthew join hands, and phase 1 of “Operation Tenth Knot” begins...

Join us next week when we get to go to France and visit with Ysabeau and Marthe!

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
