Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Special Edition! | All Souls Trilogy Fans, Get Ready for an Event! Save The Date: September 23rd, 2017

Special Edition - The One With The Good News

Description: Save the date!  September 23rd, 2017 - All Souls Con 2017 is coming!  If you missed the one in 2015, now's your chance to make plans and participate this year!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life.  If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  😊  Let's do this.

Listen:

1. Show notes:

For newcomers to the series:
- We'll start with the basics: The books in discussion are A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night and The Book of Life.  Together they make The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness.
- Our Daemon Guides to the All Souls Trilogy are available for download: ADOW, SON, TBOL
- If you'd like a ready-reference from the author herself, be sure to download the All Souls Real-Time Reading companion (free e-book at online booksellers via Penguin and Headline books).
- Deborah Harkness usually conducts a real-time reading on her Facebook Page (starting in September), and shares her posts across social media.  Check out her website for all of her social media links, and of course all that she has to offer her readers!
- To see what's available on the web as far as the All Souls universe fandom, check our links page.

In this episode:
* Hold everything! AllSoulsCon is coming! See the official announcement via Deb.  Be sure to follow ASC on Twitter @AllSoulsCon, Facebook (AllSoulsCon on Facebook), and visit the website AllSoulsCon.org.  Our next regular episode will be published next week (Take 10/The One With the Experiments) -- we figured it was more timely to get this special edition out first.

* (01:01) The Cabbage Patch -- not to be confused with the doll (from: HowCast):

* (01:17) The Hustle - It was a popular 70's Disco line dance.  Learn below! (Video from Favd15)

* (03:00) Chasing the Green Fairy! Ok, for those who don't know what this term means, let us enlighten you on the Green Fairy aka Absinthe (it sounds dirty, but it's not really...).  This video is a good (and funny!) presentation of the history of Absinthe, and why it's considered so "illicit" - video from Tasted:

* (03:41) Haunted places in New Orleans

* (03:57) The Garden District in New Orleans

* (04:24) Muriel's Jackson Square

* (04:21) Ghost/Vampire Tours, Cemetery Tour

* (05:13) Possible meet-up for Discussers?  YAS!  Details to be determined as we get closer to the event.  Become a discusser!  Go to DaemonsDiscuss.com ... scroll down, give us your name/email on the short form, fill in the code (anti-spam thing...), and click submit.  BAM!  You are a Discusser!  It's through these emails we'll give details on a future meetup at AllSoulsCon.

* (07:33) Signed items at AllSoulsCon:

Our passes from ASC 2015
Thomas Gunter (cos-play Gallowglass) getting ready to have his chest signed by Deb
* (07:48) Jennifer Ikeda was at the last ASC; she was the person who narrated the All Souls Trilogy audio books.

* (09:55) The pass price of $75 is the goal.  It would be unwise of us to say that this will be the final price.  Most likely, yes -- but we aren't the ones balancing the budget over at ASC, so we're crossing our fingers and hoping we will eventually be able to say it definitively.

Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

An Update! Points of Interest . . .

Exhibit A - One of the Daemons posted this on her FB page
-- well, it's a true story!
Well, what’s going on with us?  Not much right now, but this is the calm before the proverbial storm.  We are getting our ducks in a row for 2017 (see Exhibit A!), and gearing up for an exciting year!  It’s going to be a good one All Souls-wise (which means we have to get our crazed fan-girl hats on, and gear up!)

We know it’s been a while since we’ve held a giveaway, but don’t fret -- they are coming!  We have some good ones planned this year.  We are going to be throwing new items into our prize closets, and we can’t wait to share it with all of you!

Our podcast – WOW, guys.  It’s been crazy how that took off!  We are blown away, and the responses from episode to episode have been great. We can’t thank you enough.  Our episode on character personalities really kicked off 2017 with a bang!  Last week we did one on the Aurora Consurgens, and next week we will have an episode on Alchemy (episode/Take 10 – ALREADY!).  We also have some pre-recorded in the can waiting for release…we can’t wait to share those with you!  Visit our podcast home page for more information, and how you can get in on the discussion!

Here are some quick points of interest (ICYMI) that we’d like to highlight for our fellow fans:

Our Facebook page shares (follow us)!

On Facebook, we have shared some really cool articles in the past.  Facebook (by design), is pretty stingy about getting information out people who follow our page – 5-10 percent of our followers get our posts, unless we were to pay for promotional ads.  And, we get it … they have to make money.  Well, we are humble Daemons with limited resources.  We choose not to spend the cash from our smallish budget for Facebook ads!  We prefer putting it towards giveaways for our followers and paying the bills to keep the figurative lights on (our website + media hosting bills!  You know...the essentials!)  Since this website is already paid for, we’ll post these gems here so you don’t miss it:

Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 9! | The All Souls Trilogy and the Aurora Consurgens

Take 9 - The One With the Sun King and Moon Queen

Description: The Aurora Consurgens is subject matter that we have covered in a post on Daemons Domain, so let's discuss it!  Not unlike the pictures of the Alchemical Wedding, the verses of the Aurora Consurgens project the image of the Sun King and Moon Queen or Sol and Luna.  In this take, we tackle the verses -- specifically in Godfrey de Clermont's copy.  One of our shorter episodes; requires very little time commitment!

Listen:

1. Show notes:

B. In this episode:
* We're still dealing with some audio glitches (feedback from headphones and some growing pains!), as we change our methods of recording.  Hang in there, we've almost got this thing conquered!  We are amateur audio alchemists still blowing things up at this stage!  😚 Your patience is much appreciated!

* (00:50) – YouTube users warning: we will only post 10 full episodes, so . . . as this is episode 9, you will have one more guaranteed full episode, then if you want to continue to follow us outside of YouTube, you can listen right here on our website, or there is iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play and many others!

* (0237) – Our piece on The Sun King and The Moon Queen (originally published 10 September 2015, based on stuff we'd previously researched in 2012)

* (04:42) – The two illuminations:
1.  “Turn to me with all your heart. Do not refuse me because I am dark and shadowed. The fire of the sun has altered me. The seas have encompassed me. The earth has been corrupted because of my work. Night fell over the earth when I sank into the miry deep, and my substance was hidden.”The Moon Queen held a star in one outstretched palm. “From the depths of the water I cried out to you, and from the depths of the earth I will call to those who pass by me,” I continued. “Watch for me. See me. And if you find another who is like me, I will give him the morning star.” My lips formed the words, and Bourgot’s illumination bought the text to life in the Moon Queen’s expression that showed both her fear of rejection and her shy pride.

2.  “I will rise now and go about the city. In its streets I will seek out a pure woman to marry,” I read, “her face beautiful, her body more beautiful, her raiment most beautiful. She will roll away the stone from the entrance of my tomb and give me the wings of a dove so that I might fly with her to the heavens to live forever and be at rest.”

* (06:18) – How the moon queen relates to Diana: excerpt from the piece:
Dark and shadowed” refers to the phases of the moon (when the “crescent moon” is visible, the rest is dark and shadowed) The fire of the sun alters her because she is reflective of the sun's light based on their relative positions. The seas have encompassed her; that refers to the tides and the moon's influence on it. The earth has been corrupted 'because of her work': the tides rise and fall and rock erosion results.  Night falls over the earth in the miry deep and her substance is hidden when she is in the  “dark" phase or "new moon".

* (08:01) – An astrological explanation on how the moon affects fertility: Moon influences fertility - & the moon's relationship to the tides: Tides, and the pull of the moon and sun

* (08:52) – Triple moon goddess symbol:

* (09:30) – The morning star: Microcosm, planet Venus, (goddess Venus)

* (10:55) – The Pentacle - The symbol of Man the Microcosm of the Hermetic magicians was based on the pentacle. The pentacle represents the macrocosm with the male figure representing the cosmos within it. His feet, hands and head touch each of the points with his genitals located exactly in the center. "This image is related to Fimicus Maternus's remark that man is a microcosm ruled by `the five stars.'"  (See below: 'Whoops! Corrections')

* (13:37) – The Sun King - how the Sun King relates to Matthew:
The Scene in St. Lucien at the church, where Matthew confesses his sins to Diana; namely his suicide and the mercy killing of Philippe.  His guilt for his 'sins' was his 'tomb'.  If you remember in early ADOW he used his coffin-shaped ampulla from Lazarus as a modern reminder to himself of his past misdeeds, essentially keeping him prisoner in his 'tomb'.  The feather Matthew picks up from the dove that flew overhead symbolizes “The wings of a dove”.  The dove represents him starting to free himself from grief/guilt, and being able to turn to Diana and love her with his whole heart and whole life.  Going back to the Moon Queen’s passage, the first line reads, “Turn to me with all of your heart.”  In Christianity, a dove symbolizes hope and peace (since we went with paganism for Diana, we thought we should turn to the bible for Matthew).  The dove is a also a symbol of the Holy Spirit and the soul
 * (15:29) – Mourning dove (we imagine the one in Shadow of Night probably had some sort of albinism 😉):

* (16:20) – La Robe: “I will rise now and go about the city. In its streets I will seek out a pure woman to marry,” I read, “her face beautiful, her body more beautiful, her raiment most beautiful. She will roll away the stone from the entrance of my tomb and give me the wings of a dove so that I might fly with her to the heavens to live forever and be at rest.” Raiment defined:
rai·ment
ˈrāmənt/
nounarchaicliterary
noun: raiment; plural noun: raiments
    clothing.
"ladies clothed in raiment bedecked with jewels"

* The News You Can Use – Deb's Tweet:

* Deb's Newsletter aka"The Blast" has outlined a new publishing policy: "In the past, our website automatically sent updates to your email Every. Single. Time. we posted something new to the site. Because we like to update her website often, we worried that the volume of emails from us could become excessive.  So we're suspending the automatic update emails and rolling out this new bi-monthly newsletter, THE BLAST, instead.  This newsletter will continue to be the fastest way to receive news from Deb in your email inbox." You can subscribe to her newsletter by visiting her home page, and filling out the short email form: deborahharkness.com

C. Whoops! (Corrections)
* (12:34): As a supplement to a 25 year old memory, we present the actual facts of the the positioning of the elements of the pentacle:  Ok, Val went back to look at her book(s) and the positioning is as follows: (don’t think clockwise, think of actually following the lines of the pentacle) starting with spirit; the highest element, the line descends into fire, then follow the line to air, across to water and the lowest and most material of the elements earth.  The journey of the spirit to earth is the shape of the pentacle.  Val was kind of correct, but went off the rails when she didn’t remember the path.  Good news!  Memory has been refreshed, and hopefully you’ll gain something from reading the show notes to this point!

Daemons Discover New Haven: Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library

Matthew! tsk, tsk: “I know the library is an architectural treasure, but I still think it looks like an ice-cube tray.” ~ The Book of Life

As showcased on their website, “The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library is one of the world's largest libraries devoted entirely to rare books and manuscripts and is Yale's principal repository for literary archives, early manuscripts, and rare books. The Beinecke Library's robust collections are used to create new scholarship by researchers from around the world."

The iconic building celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013 but recently underwent a renovation.  A little nip and tuck at 50+ sounds reasonable, but alas, it was not of the cosmetic sort.  The interior and exterior panels, grids and fixtures, as well as the Noguchi Sculpture Garden, underwent a restoration.  Additionally, the functionality of the building was massively updated.  The heating and air-conditioning was upgraded.  This measure will protect the rare books and manuscripts from indoor elements and environmentally preserve them for many years to come.  Teaching spaces were also designed to include undergrad lecture rooms and a teaching lab where rare books and manuscripts can be examined and their history can be learned.  (It doesn’t sound dissimilar to Deb's History of the Book class at USC that took a hands on approach!)  They also improved the area for the library’s curators.  The new space will be bigger and can support the curators' design and presentation of library’s collection material and current exhibitions.

The contents in the famous book tower are off limits to the public, as is their Research area on the lowest level of the library.  The library overall holds a treasure-trove of rare books and manuscripts (180,000 in the book tower and more than a million in the underground stacks).  Access to the books in the tower and other repositories within are extremely limited.  Scholars and Researchers (ala Diana Bishop) must be approved for such access.  Upon seeing the sign that boldly announced "Research Readers Only", this passage came to mind:

“Bad news, I’m afraid.” Lucy Meriweather’s lips twisted in a sympathetic grimace. She was one of the Beinecke librarians, and she’d helped me for years, both with my own research and on the occasions when I brought my students to the library to use the rare books there. “If you want to look at Manuscript 408, you’ll have to go into a private room with a curator. And there’s a limit of thirty minutes. They won’t let you sit in the reading room with it.”

“Thirty minutes? With a curator?” I was stunned by the restrictions, having spent the last ten months with Matthew, who never paid any attention to rules and regulations. “I’m a Yale professor. Why does a curator have to babysit me?”

“Those are the rules for everybody—even our own faculty. The whole thing is online,” Lucy reminded me.”  ~ The Book of Life

It's actually a solemn reminder just how precious the collections are!

The famous Beinecke Library central book tower

The curatorial areas and collections range from Early Books and Manuscripts (pre 1500) to Modern Books (post 1800) to American Literature to Music.  They also put on display Recent Acquisitions.  While we were there, we were able to view Portraits of Abraham Lincoln from the Meserve Kundhart Collection, papers of poet and scholar Charles Berstein, Gregory Mosher Papers relating to David Mamet, Henri Chopin’s “The Last Novel in the World”,  and Mary Ruefle Erasure Books (really cool and palimpsest-y!) to just name a few.  Visitors are also able to view permanent exhibits such as the Gutenberg Bible. (You can view photos from these all of these exhibits in our Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library Flickr album.)

We’ve now seen the Gutenberg Bible in two different places in one year (Color us lucky, we know! Praise libraries and musuems!)  Each time, Diana’s incredulous comment while in Matthew’s Sept-Tours library is remembered:

“I absolutely refuse to treat a Gutenberg Bible as a reference book, Matthew.” My voice came out more sternly than anticipated, making me sound like a schoolmarm.” ~ A Discovery of Witches

Once again, we feel you Diana!!  Just. Look. At. It!

Gutenberg Bible
with the iconic marble walls and granite grid in the background

The Voynich Manuscript is not to be outdone, however!  Scholars can request to view the original Voynich Manuscript. In 1969, the codex was given to the Beinecke Library by H. P. Kraus, who had purchased it from the estate of Ethel Voynich, Wilfrid Voynich's widow.  The mysterious manuscript is absolutely a collection highlight.

“I’d last seen the Voynich manuscript—now Beinecke Library MS 408—in 1591, when Matthew had carried the book from Dr. Dee’s library to the court of Emperor Rudolf in Prague, hoping that we could swap it for the Book of Life.” ~ The Book of Life

We didn’t pass up our chance to purchase a copy of the facsimile, either.  It was published by Yale University Press in the autumn of 2016.  The book is by Raymond Clemens, Curator of Early Books and Manuscripts at the Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, and our own Deborah Harkness authored the book’s introduction.  (Even her writing there rings true as the author we all know and love.  As we've said, it's a pleasantly familiar voice on the page!)

After we took in all that the Beinecke has to offer, we took advantage of the beautiful autumn weather and strolled around Hewitt Quadrangle, but before leaving the area, we just had to picture our beloved, tall, dark and handsome vampire.

“Matthew was waiting for me outside. He was lounging against the low wall overlooking the Beinecke’s stark sculpture garden, his legs crossed at the ankles, thumbing through the messages on his phone. Sensing my presence, he looked up and smiled.” ~ The Book of Life

Noguchi Sculpture Garden outside of the Beinecke Library; Hewitt Quadrangle in the background
We’ll leave you with that dreamy Matthew Clairmont image.  And to that end, we bid you adieu!  Until our next adventure, #FeedYourDaemons!

P.S.  To see the complete photo gallery from our Beinecke Library excursion, visit us on Flickr, here!  But wait, there's more!  Check out our the Beinecke Library video playlist on our YouTube channel!

Daemons Discuss: Podcast - Take 8! | All Souls Trilogy Characters Take the Myers-Briggs Personality Test (sort of!)

Take 8 - The One With Personality

Description: Happy New Year! Now that the festivities of the season are in past tense, let's dive right in!  We've always been fascinated by the personalities of the characters in this series.  So fascinated in fact, that we took it a step beyond with a nudge from one of our Discussers (thank you, Michelle).  Without further ado, we present this totally unscientific analysis of different characters of this series.  Included are the Myers-Briggs personality types of (based on our own interpretations & not in order): Hamish, Stephen, Ysabeau, Philippe, Benjamin, Baldwin, Matthew, Diana, Miriam and finally Marcus -- who we took the test for while recording.  Gallowglass, Fernando and Kit were done afterwards, and we've included those results in the show notes below.

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life.  If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  :)  Let's do this.

1. Show notes:

Four humors related to personality

B. In this episode:
* Thanks go out to our Discussers early in this round: Stephen, Milana, Livia, Sheila, Jennifer, and especially Michelle who brought this subject to our table.

16 Personalities website - we like it because it takes minutes as opposed to over an hour to answer the questions and get pretty accurate results: https://www.16personalities.com/

* (00:01) Excuse the weird monotone, Valerie just woke up to record after working late the night before.  That's her "sexy voice" 😝

*  (04:46) Modernization of the 4 temperaments that Matthew probably learned about when he studied medicine in medieval times: Four temperaments is a proto-psychological theory that suggests that there are four fundamental personality types, sanguine (optimistic, active and social), choleric (short-tempered, fast or irritable), melancholic (analytical, wise and quiet), and phlegmatic (relaxed and peaceful).  It also taps into Jungian psychology - Our Theory - 16Personalities

* (26:25) Marcus….!  Tune in to hear us take the test for him.

* (28:44) Angela was referring to this scene in The Book of Life:
“Marcus is in the Round Tower with Sarah,” Ysabeau said, two spots of color brightening her usually pale complexion. “Phoebe and Hamish are with them. They’ve found the old family pedigrees.”
* (30:27) Jean was referring to Miriam’s little “tick marks” in this scene of A Discovery of Witches:
"Em and Sophie were both knitting, and Miriam was doing a puzzle she’d found in a book promising Demonically Difficult Sudoku. She chuckled now and then and made a mark in the margins.
“What are you doing, Miriam?” Sophie asked.
“Keeping score,” Miriam said, making another mark on the page.
“What are they talking about? And who’s winning?” I asked, envious of her ability to hear the conversation."
* (36:00) Marcus with the story of Lilith originates from A Discovery of Witches:
“Marcus is fond of the Pre-Raphaelites, and Miriam knows a lot of mythology. They picked the name,” Matthew said by way of explanation.
“The Pre-Raphaelites loved Lilith. Dante Gabriel Rossetti described her as the witch Adam loved before Eve.” Marcus’s eyes turned dreamy. “‘So went / Thy spell through him, and left his straight neck bent / And round his heart one strangling golden hair.’”
* (36:49) Val’s “F” word mini-rant - what was she was going on about?  To preface this 'rant' - (ok calling it a rant is quite a stretch.  It was more like a snarky aside), let's back up a bit to the early Spring of 2014 --March/April; we were lucky enough to get a hold of the "Advance Uncorrected Manuscript" from Penguin Group prior to the release of The Book of Life (being a Daemon does have certain privileges!)  The word "fuck" appeared in that manuscript no less than 6 times!  At the time we were secretly celebrating Deb's step into the dark side 😈.  The final edit found three of the the "fucks" on the cutting room floor.  That was what Val was talking about.  Not that we cheer randomly placed curse words -- but we appreciate it when they are used effectively!  Anyway, that's all that was.  We don't like doing inside jokes that don't include you, so if you made it this far, you are now in-the-know!

C. Whoops! (Corrections)
* (39:58) Not quite sure if it's correct to call this a correction (more like clarification), but during this portion of the episode, there was some confusion as to what Marcus' human profession was during the Revolutionary War.  Upon going back to look at that chapter, we do know Marcus was acting as a nurse, and it is sort of implied in context that he was officially part of the medical corp.  However, Jean was correct in saying that he would've had different roles depending on the immediate need in battle.  The quote from A Discovery of Witches:
"Marcus had listened, wide-eyed, when the French soldier railed at the head of the army’s medical corps, the esteemed Dr. Shippen, rejecting his treatment plan as “barbaric.” Clairmont demanded that the doctor’s second in command, John Cochran, treat Lafayette instead. Two days later Clairmont and Shippen could be heard arguing the finer points of anatomy and physiology in fluent Latin—to the delight of the medical staff and General Washington.
Matthew had killed more than his share of British soldiers before the Continental Army was defeated at Brandywine. Men brought into the hospital spun impossible tales of his fearlessness in battle. Some claimed he walked straight into enemy lines, unfazed by bullets and bayonets. When the guns stopped, Clairmont insisted that Marcus remain with the marquis as his nurse."

* (42:40) “Hamilton”What was Val thinking?  It’s Madison!  She has Hamilton on the brain.  By the way, do you know of a good way to get reasonably priced tickets? 😏😂

* (52:20) Val had said that we hadn't had an update from Deb for a while, but since recording this episode, she's posted the following: Monthly Inspiration Boards

 D. Bonus Material
* Fernando is an ESFJ-A, "The Consul".  Here is a quote from the personalities website that we felt was quite Fernando-like:
ESFJs are altruists, and they take seriously their responsibility to help and to do the right thing. Unlike their Diplomat relatives however, people with the ESFJ personality type will base their moral compass on established traditions and laws, upholding authority and rules, rather than drawing their morality from philosophy or mysticism. It’s important for ESFJs to remember though, that people come from many backgrounds and perspectives, and what may seem right to them isn’t always an absolute truth.

ESFJs love to be of service, enjoying any role that allows them to participate in a meaningful way, so long as they know that they are valued and appreciated. This is especially apparent at home, and ESFJs make loyal and devoted partners and parents. ESFJ personalities respect hierarchy, and do their best to position themselves with some authority, at home and at work, which allows them to keep things clear, stable and organized for everyone.
* Kit is an ENTP-T, "The Debater".  Here is a quote from the personalities website that we felt was quite Kit-like:
ENTPs are interested in what could be – malleable concepts like ideas and plans that can be adapted and debated. When it comes to hard details and day-to-day execution where creative flair isn’t just unnecessary but actually counter-productive, ENTP personalities lose interest, often with the consequence of their plans never seeing the light of day.
* Gallowglass is an ESFP-A, "The Entertainer".  Wait . . . what?!! Yes.  We took it twice -- just to make sure.  Here are a couple of snippets:
If anyone is to be found spontaneously breaking into song and dance, it is the ESFP personality type. ESFPs get caught up in the excitement of the moment, and want everyone else to feel that way, too. No other personality type is as generous with their time and energy as ESFPs when it comes to encouraging others, and no other personality type does it with such irresistible style.
Without constant excitement, ESFPs find ways to create it themselves. Risky behavior, self-indulgence, and the pleasures of the moment over long-term plans are all things ESFPs get into a little too often.  The smoking, the motorcycles, the wanderlust -- ah, yes!  We get it now.

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
