We compare a couple of AST characters to Chester and Spike (pictured above). |
SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life, and snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind! π Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

* (00:00) - Quick notes: 1. All Souls Cons tix have sold out! Live streaming is available for $5; we mentioned that there were some tix still available, but podcasters are timewalkers that speak to you from the past! 2. This episode was recorded in two sections in two different weeks, so in one part we say Jean is going to have surgery, and the rest of the episode it is fairly obvious that she's already went through the surgery. You aren't going crazy! Editing is sorcery!
* (01:44) - We didn't solicit Discusser feedback for this episode, but if you have thoughts, make sure you send them (contact info below - P.S. emails are great, voicemails via Speakpipe or phone are wonderful)!

Coat of Arms for Davy Gam aka our Hancock |
- We totally overlooked Hancock during most of our reads of Shadow of Night. We've just noticed this guy very clearly with our last re-read, and subsequent recording of the podcast episode with the chapter he barges into with Gallowglass. We found him refreshing
- We think he’s probably dead currently, but we aren’t entirely sure. The World of All Souls didn't make any statements of his current whereabouts.
- Deb tweeted this as a teaser to Time’s Convert would Davy be with them? (coming Sept 2018) spent morning on boat with Gallowglass and Marcus. did not disappoint. Have missed you, you great Norse bear.— Deborah Harkness (@DebHarkness) October 27, 2017
#TeamGallowglass - We talk about his wife Bethan aka Lizzie: “Hello, Lizzie.” Gallowglass bent over and smacked a kiss on each of her pale cheeks. “Hancock’s gone to Anglesey for Yule. I did think he expected to find his wife waiting to welcome him.”
- BREAKING NEWS! You'll have to listen to know what it is. π Some things are better appreciated when they are listened to -- also? We like our listeners to know things. So, you creatures just reading this to get the gist of the conversation? You are sorely missing out! π€ Take the plunge! Push play!
- He’s a fun ginger (Angela says that Deb write good gingers); Physical description: Davy Gam is redheaded, with bushy red eyebrows and the brawny build of a warrior
- We discuss the outtake and where the edits took place; the conversation in the outtake took place enroute to Sept-Tours, vs. in Shadow of Night it took place in Woodstock.
- Judging on how Bethan handled Matthew, we are pretty sure Davy may have been whipped! “As your man seems unwilling, you might tell me what to call you.” Matthew stepped forward, and Lizzie put up an imperious hand. “Do not interrupt, lordling.”
- We discuss formidable women and we wonder again about the “proper vampire wife,” and if this creature a unicorn. As told in Shadow of Night: “Matthew de Clermont is mated at last. But no ordinary, placid human or properly schooled female wearh who knows her place would do. Not for our Matthew. Now that he’s decided at last to settle down with one woman, it had to be a witch. We have more to worry about than the good people of Woodstock, then.”
- We bring up Miriam (sidekick alert!). We wonder about her “head of clan status” - The clan’s sire is almost always male, though there have been some famous exceptions, such as Miriam Shephard.
- Henry? A rebel (sidekick alert 2!)? “Very well. If you must know, Henry Percy is the ninth knight. His unwillingness to embrace the Protestant faith makes him vulnerable to allegations of treason here in England, and in Europe he is an easy target for every malcontent who would like to see Her Majesty lose her throne. Philippe offered him the position to shield him from those who would abuse his trusting nature.” “Henry? A rebel?” I was stunned.
- We compare Bethan to Sarah… (sidekick alert 3!); we discuss Sarah a bit here.
- We wonder about Hamish’s (sidekick alert 4!) Sweet William, and we think about how Deb weaves the stories, and how she must know many of the mentioned characters back-stories.
- We speculate why it isn’t revealed that Hancock is a de Clermont. We are going with the theory Diana didn’t ask, and Hancock didn’t offer up the information. He may be more tight lipped than Gallowglass. It's no one's tale to tell but his . . . that's what we are going with, anyway. π
Domenico Michele - Doge of Venice |
- Our initial impression of Domenico was as a friend that grew apart from Matthew. We considered them equal peers at one point. WE WERE WRONG!
- We discuss the backstory, and how Matthew met him on a 'time-out' - or 'better choice' tour that Philippe had put him on. Matthew wound up out to sea because Philippe sent him away. Why? Because Matthew was being a pain in the ass!
- This backstory hearkens back to Bram Stoker's Dracula (as pointed out by Jean).
- Matthew befriended him (reluctantly), and Domenico worshipped Matthew. We compare him to characters from Looney Tunes cartoons; he was Chester to Matthew's Spike. Jean compared him to Single White Female, because of Domenico’s wanting to emulate Matthew; 'Domenico started adopting some of Matthew’s turns of phrase and imitating the way he walked. Domenico called him “brother,” and asked too many questions about Matthew’s family in France.'
- Domenico was bitter because Matthew left him, and he didn't get a chance to partake in the riches amassed by the de Clermonts due to what he (correctly) assumed was Matthew black-balling him. 'Avarice was another of Domenico’s flaws.'
- Domenico was vengeful. He got to Matthew by affecting the people he loved. Louisa, and subsequently, Diana were perfect targets. Part of the charm of having Louisa, Domenico knew, was taking something that belonged in some small way to Matthew. But Matthew believed that this witch was his entirely. Not only would her blood be sweet, but every drop he consumed would destroy a part of his former friend’s soul. Domenico’s revenge on Matthew would at last be complete.
- When the “killing” was brought up in ADOW, we finally realize what that actually meant - from ADOW, ch 22: “I will kill you myself before I let anyone hurt you.” The words caught in his throat. “And I don’t want to kill you. So please do what I tell you.”
- We discuss Baldwin’s roles in Jerusalem. He played a few generations of kings!
- We discuss Ysabeau’s utter hatred of Domenico, as evident in ADOW
- We discuss the different orders that the creatures belong to. The Hospitallers belong to the witches, and the Templars belonged to the vampires.
- We talk about Domenico accusing Matthew of the “dalliance” with Diana, when we know about Domenico’s dalliance with the daemon Tatiana in The Book of Life. “You know this, brother. I’m not the only vampire on the Congregation. Gerbert has a seat alongside me, and you’ve seen him protect our kind ruthlessly from threats far smaller than the one posed by your dalliance with this witch.”
* (45:47) Save It For the Show - brought to you by Deborah Taylor! - Join the FB group Daemonic Discussers!
- The word: 'Fucking Firedrake.' Make sure you answer question 2!
- * NOTE: Please keep in mind that this group is only a supplement to our podcast. We recommend that you join only if you truly enjoy the podcast and want to discuss things further. Listening just to gain entry will be a waste of our time, and frankly yours! The screening process has been intensified to keep membership intimate, and to try to keep out folks who don’t have the best intentions for the group and its dynamic. It's an imperfect process, but we are determined to keep it a healthy place for speculation and more detailed discussion for all members, including us. When we opened the group, we decided to require listener-only membership because podcasting is a very personal medium. People who listen tend to know how we are and think. Those who like what we have to say (and don't find us too abrasive/foul-mouthed/opinionated π), will most likely enjoy the group to its fullest, and utilize it as a sounding board with other like-minded members who have the ability to peacefully discuss divergent or opposing ideas. We don't have time to worry about mal-intent, because it breeds drama and discourse. If we're not comfortable, then the rest of the members won't be comfortable. None of this is negotiable. It's simply how it is. This is why the Facebook group is not public and we don't advertise it on Deb's website, social media, or other venues.

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
