Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Bonus Edition! | All Souls Con and New Orleans; A Re-cap from the Daemons' POV

3 Daemons and a vampire walk into a bar . . .

Bonus Edition - It Begins With Absinthe and Disaster

Description: 2017 All Souls Con has come and gone, and we exaggerate a bit when we say 'disaster,' because considering the circumstances, we came out way ahead! This episode is a huge thank you to Laura, Karen + the entire crew at All Souls Con, and our fellow fans. It's also a love letter to New Orleans (and its food and drink. Well, judging from the pictures, perhaps that's the bulk of what we did). We'll see you all in Philadelphia next year!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life.  If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  😊  Let's do this.

1. Show notes:

For newcomers to the series:- We'll start with the basics: The books in discussion are A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night and The Book of Life.  Together they make The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness.
- Our Daemon Guides to the All Souls Trilogy are available for download: ADOW, SON, TBOL

Deb's newsletter - The Blast; subscribe on her website
- If you'd like a ready-reference from the author herself, be sure to download the All Souls Real-Time Reading companion (free e-book at online booksellers via Penguin and Headline books).
- Deborah Harkness usually conducts a real-time reading on her Facebook Page (starting in September), and shares her posts across social media. Check out her website for all of her social media links, and of course all that she has to offer her readers! Be sure to sign up for her newsletter while you are there!

In this episode:
* (00:42) – Thanks go Discussers: Stephen, Shelli, Alicia, Patricia, New England Angela & Deb

* (09:17) – The ballroom at the NOPSI that Angela mentioned (the picture does it no justice!)

* (09:55) – Tim’s pictures can be found here: All Souls Con 2017 on Flickr

* (11:37) – Lalaurie ... why we weren't so keen to visiting it our first night in New Orleans . . .

Lalaurie house
* (13:32) – Café Du Monde:

Perfect for a hot day ... frozen lattes and beignets!
* (13:40) – Muriel’s Jackson Square

On the balcony at Muriel's!
* (14:15) – The Royal Oyster Bar and the Pimm’s cup! TRY THE CHAR-GRILLED OYSTERS WITH CRAB! Cindi served us. She was magnificent!

Fantastic drink! Pimm's cup at the Royal Oyster Bar!
* (15:25) – We also tried Acme Oyster House

* (17:24) – That Cajun dessert at Tableau - the way it is described on the menu: TARTE À LA BOUILLIE; Rustic Cajun sweet dough, vanilla custard, Old New Orleans Rum caramel sauce

* (17:51) – The Daemons’ Dilemma drink created for Daemon Hour, consisted of Cabernet, Champagne, Gin and Citrus.

* (18:31) – Thank you to those who participated in Daemon Hour at the NOPSI Undercurrent bar! We played an All Souls centered version of “True Confessions” during Daemon Hour.

These brave people claimed their confessions!
* (22:50) – Contact ASC for volunteer opportunities at All Souls Con Philadelphia in 2018!

* (24:26) – We were talking about the Daemon’s favorite Yogini, Aly, (friend of the podcast and a friend of us) who at the time of recording hadn’t had her baby yet! Aly and her husband welcomed their healthy baby boy, Gideon, into the world on 9/30/17 (1 day after we recorded this episode). Congratulations, Aly! 👶 You can listen to Aly's guest episode here: go.DaemonsDiscuss.com/SE1

* (25:03) – Dinner after Daemon hour was at the NOPSI restaurant ('Public Service').

* (25:36) – The “Swear Jar”... that started during our rehearsal of the panel! Angela noted we were dropping quite a few 'f' bombs all over the place while discussing these characters. We really did need a swear jar!

* (27:00) – The day of the Con. Below is the surprise video we got from Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode. You can catch the panel session videos at AllSoulsCon.org.

* (27:28) – The alluvial fans

* (32:04) – We discuss (Discusser and Dr.) Shelli’s panel here.

* (33:42) – Shelli joined us as our fourth in the hunt for the green fairy. We went to The Old Absinthe House, and got custom made glasses of absinthe tailored to our individual palates. Ask for Julie!

Cheers! 4 different types of absinthe + 4 curious creatures = the night's antics
* (35:17) – We suspect Verin submitted this as a design for the new Knights of Lazerus uniform! (3 Daemons and a vampire walk into the Hustler shop in New Orleans … fill in your own punchline!)

We imagine this design got rejected upon review . . .
* (36:50) – Prior to the absinthe, we ate at the Cellar Door . . . The oldest building standing in the business district.  Originally a brothel, and also HAUNTED.

40:12 – Yes, Val used the Daemons Domain main Twitter account (not that it would be much better but ... you'd think she'd use the one for the podcast, but NOOOOOOO!) to try to contact Discusser Wendy at 1:30 in the morning. Yikes! Angela normally would never allow this, however she was drunk had impaired judgement too. FYI, we did get a hold of Wendy eventually!

* (40:44) – Wendy manned our jewelry table! Our jewelry will be available for the public to buy in time for Christmas. Our T-shirts and other items will be available early next year.

Will available in time for Christmas. All profits will be rolled right back into our operation (aka hosting & postage costs!)
* (42:06) – Taye Diggs (Val’s computer) . . . story on the naming of the laptop at a later date! It's definitely Daemons Discuss! related!

* (42:20) – We now have a Facebook group! Daemonic Discussers. Use the term “Fucking Firedrake” (or some cleaned-up variation 😉) for easy entry on the first question. Yes, Val really did have that inscribed on her copy of The Book of Life a few years ago!

Valerie's copy of The Book of Life
* (47:50) Promo breakscroll down, or click here to get a hold of us and/or become a Discusser.

* (49:29) – Last thoughts! Jean’s last thought, and she thinks each con will get better and better. She also admits her French is like Elaine Benes' dancing. Shouts to Lynn, Linda & Janelle. Angela is having NOLA withdrawals. She emphasizes to not delay in buying your tickets for next year. We are going to have a couple of books coming and the TV show! Val loved hanging with the girls in New Orleans in person (Facebook messenger has missed us!). Big shouts to Jen T. and congratulations on your upcoming nuptials.

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
