Miriam, who are you? |
Take 50 - The One With the Enigma
Description: In this episode we turn our focus on Miriam as our character "on the tens!" We got to see her in action on the TV show, and learn more facets of her personality in Time's Convert, but in the end ... what do we exactly know about her? Hence, the title of the episode: The Enigma. Still, it's engaging to imagine what she's seen and done in her past as we look forward to learning more in the future!SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind! Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way when it is released in the US/Canada. π Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

Character Study - Miriam Shephard
- We first met Miriam in the Bodleian with this: “A diminutive girl was stacking up papers and file folders in the second alcove. She was dressed in a long, baggy brown sweater that reached almost to her knees. When she turned, I was startled to see a full-grown adult. Her eyes were amber and black, and as cold as frostbite.”
- Our impressions: Jean describes her as efficacious , Angela describes someone she knew that reminded her of Miriam. We also discuss her small stature.
- Matthew’s tell? Why was he nervous?!
- Valerie pictured her as a Goth-y girl.
- We discuss how we tricked ourselves into thinking she was a subordinate/assistant - it didn’t help that she was often paired up with Marcus.
- We talk about the dichotomy of her description in ADOW vs. TWOAS
- Her scents give clues of her origins.
- Miriam on the TV show did come across as book Miriam to us.
- We discuss the errand that Matthew sent her on to pace Diana when she goes to lunch.
- We discuss the conversation held between Marcus, Miriam and Matthew in the TV show, and how long Miriam has been involved with the subject of Diana.
- Miriam is in charge ALL labs!
- Jean and Val have been watching Friends (full disclosure!) - and Angela says we were integrating the story lines of that and Real Genius with A Discovery of Witches.
- We discuss the scene in the TV show where Matthew is worrying over Diana’s first deliberate time-walk, and Miriam’s reaction.
- We discuss how the TV show brought out Marcus and Miriam as stand-outs.
- We discuss our Miriam encounters in the Book of Life, and how she was upset/scared over Benjamin, and how she took over the lab in New Haven.
- Miriam was sure to deliver truth bombs everywhere. (And TV Gillian! She still walks the earth).
- We love the book bits (scrabble, film noir, keeping notes/score on debates/discussions).
- Her Chris flirtation/affair.
- Angela’s adventures in New Haven (see links below).
- TWOAS - Name: Hebrew - wished for child, Rebellious. We discuss the fact she is a clan head.
- Her role of watching over Matthew.
- We speculate when Matthew entered her life.
- Her marriage/mating with Bertrand
- Miriam’s parenting style.
- Miriam’s dead daughters.
- We discuss the dialogue with Sonia.
- We discuss the fact that she’s godmother to Rebecca.
- We veer to Baldwin for a few…

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
