Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 28! | Happy Holidays! From Us to All Creatures in the All Souls World

Happy Holidays from us to you!

Take 28 - The One With Good Intentions

Description: We called this one "Good Intentions," because we've got them! We are light on All Souls discussion this episode, yet heavy on holiday-centric good cheer for all souls! Have a great 2018! We'll see you next year!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

In this episode:
* (00:31) - Kevin MacLeod’s version of The Sugar Plum Fairy (Dark Mix) is what we chose for our 2017 holiday edition. Kevin is also the person that composed Ghost Dance, the song we use for our regular opening theme. His music is licensed for use under Creative Commons.

* (01:48) – Yes, we recorded on Veteran’s day! Hey! We are busy Daemons! We find pockets of time to record where we can. As Jean says: "bygones!"

* (04:01) – The dancing scene from the Peanuts special (the shrug and the pony):

From A Charlie Brown Christmas - Music by Vince Guaraldi Trio. Full video is here.
* (04:59) – The sad tree:

A scene from A Charlie Brown Christmas depicting the sad tree.
* (06:10) – Jean reflects on the last year, we got to go to New Orleans, there is a TV show coming, and we have 35 episodes on the books!

* (07:04) – Angela is blown away by this podcast, our commitment to a regular schedule, and how we connect with each other live regularly, and with other people!

* (09:06) – We discuss why we decided to do a podcast back in 2015, and how we came out of our Daemon closets.

* (12:07) – Valerie was surprised at the planning it takes to do a podcast. Angela tells how we don’t plan what we are going to say, we just plan the topics.

* (13:31) – We talk about the growth of the fandom.

* (16:07) – We discuss Angela’s first rounds with social media and how we chose her to be our social media guru (in 2012). The tweet above was the event that turned Angela into a social media maven (little did she know!). The result (well, we think she's responsible): Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Figueras Talks Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

* (18:45) – Thank you Wendy, Lisa, (NE) Angela and Dr. Shelli for sharing your traditions with us.

* (20:47) – Elf on a shelf: NOPE.

From the Buzzfeed article 22 Naughty Things The Elf On A Shelf Is Doing While You're Not Home
* (22:06) – CHRISTMAS VACATION + COUSIN EDDIE!

Cousin Eddie in Christmas Vacation
* (25:34) – That house in Delaware!

* (27:28) – That mannequin Christmas display Jean was talking about, plus some blow-up decorations -- also, read about the Interlochen Christmas tradition of lights: Meet the Neighbors: Interlochen Christmas Lights a Family Tradition (the home of Jean's "ghost bride"!)

* (29:22) – Angela describes a mannequin with an Elmer Fudd hat + a kimono…we couldn’t find the picture, but Angela was flat out busted peeping on her neighbor's mannequin! ALSO? Scroll up! Check out Cousin Eddie's photo . . . as we were making these notes, Angela figured out that THAT is who the mannequin was modeled after!

* (30:56) – Our podcast as we envision it:

Preparing to record . . . strap in!
* (32:18) – Food traditions discussed here!

* (32:45) – Piecaken:

Recipe here --> http://www.geniuskitchen.com/recipe/thanksgiving-piecaken-524744
* (33:31) – The pie that wasn’t “the best in the world,” grape pie w/ rosemary. Boo! Try it for yourself. Angela says recreational marijuana is legal in Washington, so perhaps one of those people indulging would enjoy such a dish?

Grape pie, Shaggy and Scooby?
* (34:55) – Angela says at her house they’ve occasionally made Turkey Mole.

* (35:51) – Valerie’s (her husband's) holiday oven this year:
Lil' Tex Smoker from Traeger

* (36:40) – Jean enjoys making Turkey a la King. On Christmas Eve, they do tomato soup and grilled cheese.

* (39:11) – Our plans next year as Daemons: Philadephia for All Souls Con 2018 & new books coming out. With the TV show, during the airing of the shows we will go from fortnightly to weekly to cover the series episodes. We will continue on with chapter episodes and all of the other things we already cover during our episodes.

* (42:45) Promo break – scroll down, or click here to get a hold of us and/or become a Discusser -- information on joining our Facebook group also located on that page.

* (44:28) – Jean said she’s going to try to not run us off of the road so much (Val and Angela: NOOOOOOO! We like the diversions!), Val’s says “ya know” too much, she’s going to try to do it less. We discuss Valerie’s laughter and Angela’s use of the term “ok!” Angela is seriously going to work on her patience this year, Jean is going to try to not let others bother her too much. Valerie will try to be more engaged with our audience as a whole (on social media).

* (48:44) – Happy Holiday’s everyone!  Have a spectacular 2018! Thank you to our OG (Original Gangster) Discussers, our Facebook group* participants, and also to those of you who tune in just for background noise! Hopefully you haven't tuned us out while we say thank you! We'll see you all next year!
  • Join the FB group Daemonic Discussers!
  • The word: 'Fucking Firedrake.' Make sure you answer question 2!
  • * NOTE: Please keep in mind that this group is only a supplement to our podcast. We recommend that you join only if you truly enjoy the podcast and want to discuss things further. Listening just to gain entry will be a waste of our time, and frankly yours! The screening process has been intensified to keep membership intimate, and to try to keep out folks who don’t have the best intentions for the group and its dynamic. It's an imperfect process, but we are determined to keep it a healthy place for speculation and more detailed discussion for all members, including us. When we opened the group, we decided to require listener-only membership because podcasting is a very personal medium. People who listen tend to know how we are and think. Those who like what we have to say (and don't find us too abrasive/foul-mouthed/opinionated 😈), will most likely enjoy the group to its fullest, and utilize it as a sounding board with other like-minded members who have the ability to peacefully discuss divergent or opposing ideas. We don't have time to worry about mal-intent, because it breeds drama and discourse. If we're not comfortable, then the rest of the members won't be comfortable. None of this is negotiable. It's simply how it is. This is why the Facebook group is not public and we don't advertise it on Deb's website, social media, or other venues.

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
