Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 11! | Blood Rage; Our Dodgy Fictional Science Discussion On the Affliction Affecting Vampires in The All Souls Trilogy

Take 11 - The One With Anger Management

Description: Blood rage is an affliction that was kept in the closet in the All Souls Universe (much like the existence of weavers).  In this episode we tackle the subject with some of our theories of the science of blood rage, and how it was handled within the de Clermont family.

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life.  If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  😊  Let's do this.

Listen:

1. Show notes:

For newcomers to the series:
- We'll start with the basics: The books in discussion are A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night and The Book of Life.  Together they make The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness.
- Our Daemon Guides to the All Souls Trilogy are available for download: ADOW, SON, TBOL
- If you'd like a ready-reference from the author herself, be sure to download the All Souls Real-Time Reading companion (free e-book at online booksellers via Penguin and Headline books).
- Deborah Harkness usually conducts a real-time reading on her Facebook Page (starting in September), and shares her posts across social media.  Check out her website for all of her social media links, and of course all that she has to offer her readers!
- To see what's available on the web as far as the All Souls universe fandom, check our links page.
- AllSoulsCon 2017 is HAPPENING!  Visit AllSoulsCon.org for social media links and information.  Also!  If you are planning on attending, be sure to join this Facebook group: All Souls Con Attendees

In this episode:
* (01:48) Thank you Discussers, Angela, Jei, and especially Stephen for the subject!

* (02:19) Theory is just that – theory!  We aren’t claiming any superior science knowledge … as a matter of fact, our science brains come with significant handicaps!  Anyway, it’s fun to theorize on fictional science. 😉

* (10:17) The whole trilogy as one book is available!  Here is one of the places you can buy it: 3-in-1 eBook of the Trilogy

* (13:14) from ADOW “normal is a fairytale” ... we were close(ish):
“‘Normal’ is a bedtime story—a fable—that humans tell themselves to feel better when faced with overwhelming evidence that most of what’s happening around them is not ‘normal’ at all.” ~ Chapter 8, A Discovery of Witches
* (16:26) Beserkers - Wikipedia

Chromosomes/DNA

* (17:13) Creature genetic refresher: humans… 23 pairs of chromosomes, witches 24 pairs of chromosomes, vampires 24 pairs of chromosomes,  and daemons have 23 pairs + 1 extra chromosome.

* (17:52) Junk DNA mentioned in both A Discovery of Witches and The Book of Life.  Also see non-coding DNA

* (24:20) The Covenant according to Ysabeau:
“A council of nine—three from each order of daemons, witches, and vampires. It was established during the Crusades to keep us from being exposed to the humans. We were careless and became too involved in their politics and other forms of insanity.” Ysabeau’s voice was bitter. “Ambition, pride, and grasping creatures like Michele who were never content with their lot in life and always wanted more—they drove us to the covenant.”

* (24:43) Daemon genetic conclusion in TBOL:
“Diana was able to conceive Matthew’s child because they both have daemon blood in them,” Chris explained. “It’s too early to know for sure, but our hypothesis is that weavers are descended from ancient witch-daemon unions. Blood-rage vampires like Matthew are produced when a vampire with the blood-rage gene creates another vampire from a human with some daemon DNA.”
* (25:00) Eugenics - [yoo-jen-iks]:
the study of or belief in the possibility of improving the qualities of the human species or a human population, especially by such means as discouraging reproduction by persons having genetic defects or presumed to have inheritable undesirable traits (negative eugenics) or encouraging reproduction by persons presumed to have inheritable desirable traits (positive eugenics)

* (26:20) Using blood rage creatures as weapons … see whoops/corrections below

* (27:25) "Doberman rage" - Rage Syndrome in Dogs

* (30:55) Dexter!  The “cuddly” serial killer

* (31:34) Weekly Geek on Benjamin- Benjamin's Early Days.

* (32:09) The Draculesti or House of Drăculești

Show poster from the movie "Zelig"

* (32:35) Zelig (Woody Allen).  Jean called Benjamin the evil “Zelig”

* (39:58) Ysabeau and the Goddess story…this is was the story Valerie was looking forward to in The Book of Life, but never got:

“So the goddess saved my son,” she murmured. “She has a sense of justice, as well as a sense of humor.  But that is too long a tale for today. When you are next at Sept-Tours, I will tell you.”
* (42:07) This is Jean’s brain on science --Val did eventually find a sound effect for the frying pan (she didn’t get to wreck her ugly granite counter with a cast iron frying pan.   Quel dommage  😛).

* (45:40) Don’t miss these posts:

Whoops!/Corrections
We were talking about using blood rage as a weapon, but WOW, we totally failed on bringing this up: Philippe basically used Matthew as a weapon.  It was discussed in The Book of Life.  Big whoops!

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:

Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
